Central Campus

Overview

Central Campus currently provides housing for over 1,000 students. These apartments include studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom units and are fully furnished. In addition to the undergraduate housing on Central Campus, approximately 54 spaces are available for first-time International graduate and professional students at the Swift Avenue Townhouses.

All apartments come with basic furnishings, including:

  • Dining room table and chairs
  • Stove, sink and refrigerator
  • Couch, lamp, and end tables
  • Chest of drawers, bookcase, desk, and bed

Apartment units have ample closet space and are equipped with window coverings. Linens, housekeeping supplies, and cookware are the responsibility of the residents.

Community laundry areas are provided within the complex. U.S. Mail is delivered to a central location for the residents on Central Campus. Parking is also available on the property and is managed by Parking and Transportation Services.

Bus service is provided at regular intervals between Central Campus and other areas of the University. West Campus, where most classes and library facilities are located, is a short bus ride or a quick walk from the main Central Campus.  The Swift Avenue apartments are most accessible via the university bus system or
Duke Van Services (919-684-2020).

Recreation and social facilities on Central Campus include:

  • Devil's Bistro Restaurant at the Mill Village
  • Mill Village study and social rooms
  • Mill Village outdoor patio
  • Mill Village gym
  • Uncle Harry's Convenience Store at the Mill Village
  • Basketball courts
  • Sand volleyball court
  • Swimming pool (one on the main Central Campus by the Mill Village and one at Swift Avenue)
  • Barbecue and picnic shelter
  • Barbecue grills in numerous locations
  • Devil's Den

Pets are not permitted in any residential facility at Duke University.  The only exception is for students participating in a feline-friendly pilot program at 205 Oregon for 2010-2011.

Service and Maintenance Requests

For after-hours, weekend and holiday lockout, maintenance and facilities issues please page 919-970-9815 for the Resident Assistant (RA) on-call.

For all other emergencies, please call Duke Police at 911 if calling from a university phone line.  Please call 919-684-2444 if calling from a cellular phone.

Central Campus - Residence Life

The Central Campus residential life team members include 14 Resident Assistants, 2 Graduate Residents, 2 Residence Coordinators and the Assistant Dean for Central Campus. The Resident Assistant (RA) is a key student leadership role within Residence Life and Housing Services. Resident Assistants serve as a resource and positive community facilitator for the designated apartment buildings in their area.  Each is a member of the central campus team that is responsible for residential education, policy enforcement, on-call rotation, and support of resident’s needs.  As key leaders responsible for helping shape and maintain positive residential communities, Resident Assistants are role models for their residents and others in the university community.

Central Campus Council

As representatives of Central Campus, Central Campus Council (CCC) works towards building a sense of community on through programming and addressing policy concerns on Central Campus.  CCC is a great leadership experience for anyone who is interested in getting involved. If you have an interest in joining Central Campus Council, please complete an interest form via the following website prior to 5 pm on Thursday September 2nd.

Any student wishing to serve as a representative to Central Campus Council may do so, so long as the following conditions are met:

A) All representatives are undergraduate residents of Central Campus, full time students for both semesters of the academic year, and shall maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.

B) No more than 3 members of any fraternity or selective living group, or other residential group recognized by the university, shall serve concurrently on Central Campus Council

C) No more than 2 individuals, or ten percent of the population of a building (whichever number of students is greater) shall serve concurrently on Central Campus Council.
