25: Our Friends in the North

Number 8 in the Drama Series/Serial category

still

Powerful and evocative drama series following four Tyneside friends from the early '60s to the mid '90s. The characters were placed in a social and political context that allowed an exploration of how Britain had changed in this period. Far from being dry and worthy, however, viewers were gripped because, for all their flaws, they cared about what happened to the friends. The series impressed with its ambition, humanity and willingness to see the ambiguities beyond the rhetoric.    PW
