Latest 'Ghostbusters III' Rumor Blames Bill Murray... Again
Tuesday, January 11, 2011

Deadline just did a report on Columbia Pictures' struggle to get Ghostbusters III off the ground, with the highlight once again punning the blame on an unsigned Bill Murray. Earlier reports indicated Murray had recently received a new screenplay and now Director IvanReitman and Sony Pictures have no idea if the mercurial Murray will smile on the script they've just sent him. Without Murray, the studio absolutely will NOT make the film, which gives an extraordinary amount of leverage to a quirky actor who leaves financiers sweating until the moment he shows up on the set. It appears Murray is to blame. More inside....

Deadline writes:

"This is too big a project to play games. "The studio won't even think about forward on a $150 million film unless Bill has a closed deal and a commitment," said an insider. "It's too huge a risk to do any meaningful prep, hoping he shows up."

It has been 21 years since the last Ghostbusters sequel, which wasn't as good as the 1984 original and didn't gross as much. Despite that, Sony Pictures Entertainment has tried over and over to scare up a new ghost comedy that would entice Murray and his compatriots Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis for another encore. It has gone long past the point when a studio hurries a sequel to capitalize on the momentum of the last film and nobody was going to hurry unless a good script made it worthwhile, Sony has proven adept at figuring out problem sequels: for years, Men in Black 3 seemed unmake-able because of the battles between director Barry Sonnenfeld and producer Walter Parkes, a prohibitive amount of first dollar gross committed, and the inability to agree on a creative direction. When a good script finally materialized, Sonnenfeld and Parkes made peace and talent traded first dollar gross for cash break deals. The picture is slotted for May 25, 2012 release.

SPE thinks it has the same opportunity on Ghosbusters III, because of the script by The Office writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky. Murray had been aloof about an Ghostbusters but Aykroyd and Ramis felt a thaw after the cast got together a couple of years ago to work on a video game. Eisenberg and Stupnitsky delivered the goods, and Aykroyd, Ramis and Reitman added their own touches before sending the script to Murray. The script brings back the original cast, who pass the torch to newcomers, which sets up future installments.

When the mercurial Murray does turn up on a film set, it's worth the wait. He's generating Best Supporting Actor talk for his performance in Get Low, and he was a definite highlight of Sony's Zombieland. But nobody envies a studio having to rely on him for such a big piece of business, because Murray moves to the beat of his own drum. Even trying to get an answer on Murray's thoughts conjures up the signature Ghostbusters line, 'Who you gonna call?' He has been without an agent for several years and doesn't have a publicist. He has an attorney but a call to his office was met with the curt reply that they don't talk to reporters. Bottom line: a yes from Murray moves Ghostbusters III right into pre-production, with shooting to begin as fast as possible. If Murray says no, the film doesn't have a ghost of a chance. No pressure, Dr. Peter Venkman."

I've been watching, waiting and following everything for this movie for months now...but, now at this point I won't get excited until I'm sitting in the theater at the midnight showing opening night even then I might doubt it.

This could make me hate Mr. Murray for the rest of eternity

I will be ridiculously bummed out if this dosen't take place. Especially considering his recent appearance at the Scream awards following the release of the video game not to mention his role in Zombieland. It's such a tease!! And would be a very cruel and sadistic joke to the fans of the series. I hate to say this but I will probably lose a lot of respect for Bill if not all of it. He knows there are rabid fans out there who've been waiting for this for eons! Why toy with us like a cat does so with a mouse. I have some faith that he'll be good to us fans and pull through, but if he dosen't... than all my child hood idol worship was based on lies and bull-shitery.

A new Ghostbusters would be fun, but really this rumor seems a bit flimsy. Since when have studios ever cared about keeping it real? How many countless reboots have scrapped the old cast in a second if there was money to be made?

Seems like Murray is thinking about retirement and doesn't think another sequel is needed for the Ghostbuster franchise. He might be right, I liked the first two movies and I don't really see a need for a third.

Don't give in Bill!!! There's no need for another Ghostbusters movie. I love the first two, and will be absolutely downright, fucking furious if I saw anybody in those uniforms except for Murray, Aykroyd, Ramis, and Hudson... oh yeah, and Rick Moranis. The last thing in the world that needs to happen is Ghostbusters going the same rape-trodden path of Indiana Jones. And how can you blame Bill Murray (or even worse, lose respect for him) for not wanting to do it? His career will be unaffected by it whether the film is greenlit or not. If you want a sequel that bad, play the fucking videogame, cuz that's basically what it was.

The thing is, is that Bill Murray does not need to make this movie. He has a career that is going along just fine. It's all the other has-beens like Harold Ramis and Dan Akroyd who need to make this to put themselves back on the map.

I love Murray, but they're giving him way too much power. Without him, the movie won't be made? So the rest of the cast are just a bunch of nobodies that can't carry a picture? I disagree! I say kill him off, and let his "son" character pick up the torch with a new group mixed in with the remaining crew. There's plenty of stories that can still be told!

I should just watch Bill's movies and stop reading articles about him and watching his biographies, etc. because i am a big fan of his movies but now i think he one of the biggest cunts in Hollywood.

Think of it this way: If he says no, the studio might just go with a remake with a completely new cast and crew. (I wouldn't want that either)

xedgeinx - Agreed 100%. Thank God Murray is the way he is. The chances that Ghostbusters III would be any good (does nobody here remember Ghostbusters II???) are slim to none. At least somebody involved could give a crap about how they're career goes or how much money they'll make. It's really probably best that Ghostbusters III never happens.

same here kelly and skratchy. its rediculous! if he wasnt to be a jerk about it and keeps playing games i say just drop him. kill him off screen that way he dont have to be "bothered" bc he is SUCH A BIG STAR now (being sarcastic) and just have oscar take over his pops role as the new leader of the new gb

Can't really blame him for not wanting to do it, part 2 was fucking terrible. People need to move on, fuck Ghostbusters 3. Why would anyone still want it to happen now, ever since it was first announced it has been plagued with problems, and that will definitely show in the finished project.

Everyone needs to lay off on Mr. Murray. After all he just received a second screenplay so why shouldn't he have the right to look it over and think about it. Even if this doesn't get made I wont be to upset nor will I have an attitude towards Mr. Murray. I respect his decision.

Murray, Reitman, Aykroyd, Ramis own parts of the rights. $ony cannot legally make another without them. I love how people are getting pissed at Murray because he has taste. All the rumors and news reeks of $ony involvement, and the Year One writers????? Yuck, I can tell you right now its crap. Passing the torch sequels are lame and always turn out horrendously bad. Thankgod Murray is keeping the quality up to some level. If he wasn't involved they would've shot the first draft and it would've been really bad, because $ony's just after the name they don't care if it's good or not. And GB2 was a great film.

If the script is shit, then he should not do it, i want to see a great Ghostbusters movie not some 2nd rate crap..

It may not be popular, but I like and respect Bill Murray's position. The man will look out for his best interests and, in terms of a sequel, it will probably be the films' best interest as well. In light of this, if this film gets made it will probably be excellent.

Murray is only killing the 1000 or so of us that would love to see another one with the original cast for nostalgia sake. Bill Murray is truly the Brett Favre of Hollywood. Bill could take a lesson from MIB. I guess another sequel is in the works, my kids are even stokes about it. They couldn't care less about Ghostbusters. At this point - I think they turn it over to a younger cast and collect their piece of the pie. This is past old.

I thought long and hard about this and whilst a ghostbusters without the original crew may seem sacrilegious in every respect, not so long ago I thought the same about StarTrek. My love for Kirk and crew easy equalled my love for Venkman and crew. Problem was for me if they didn't get at least "Bones" right then the whole thing was gonna die on it's ass and do you know what? They did and it didn't. So maybe it's just possible to do a Ghostbusters with the originals (if you will) having cameo parts. Perhaps it's just another way to look at it. Also maybe get Rietman to pass the reigns in the directors chair so he can be producer (abit like George Lucas in Empire Strikes Back) and get fresh talent in. Because to be honest Reitman had another attempt with "Evolution" and with the talent involved it should have been a run away success with several sequels. But it wasn't. So get a new Director, new writers and Reitman can do some producing. How about the people behind Kick Ass perhaps, They'd have no problem with "I have seen shit that will turn you white" for a family film

They really need to throw in the towel on this one. If they ever actually finish the movie it will suck. We all know it, why bother ?

I will fucking Believe when I see it. But I don't think its going to happen at all. Between this and new Spawn movie it just pisses me off. Either make the fucking movie or don't.

WOW.. this one really brought out the posters... but someone DID put this RIGHT ON THE HEAD, so to speak. I remember all the HYPE for the movie "Year One".. Ramis directing.. Jack Black.. MIcheal Cera.. and.. I don't know.. the trailers made me think "HIstory of the World part One".. not the best of Brooks' work, I admit.. but.. has its fun moments.. then the "talk " of this crew doing a third GB flick.. but.. did ANYONE here watch "Year One" and think.. we want those friggin HACKS near "Ghostbusters"?!!! I know the second one wasn't great, at all.. but it did at least have its MOMENTS.. especially Murry (although Scrooged came out the year prior and a MUCH better film). But.. Ramis has lost alot of his directing skill of the last decade.. his last REALLY watchable film.. MAYBE "Analyze This"? (and.. as much as I LOVE the leads.. wasn't even all that crazy about that.. much less the sequel). The DIRECTOR.. although I was PSYCHED for a GB 3 after "Evolution".. or hell.. I'd settle for an "Evolution 2" for that matter, fun enough.. campy kind of fun.. but.. "My Super Ex-Girlfriend"? Reitman.. meh? and Aykroyd? I LOVE him.. but aside from a great cameo in "Grosse Point Blank" now a good.. FOURTEEN years ago.. can't think of much memorable work from him either.. So.. would it be a SHOCK that a former great comedy director.. (actually 2).. and good writer/comic actor.. WANT to make a film that would get their names OUT THERE? I would RATHER have seen the Aykroyd/Ramis treatment from a few years back that WOULD have been a 3 and 4.. but alas, not to be it seems.

I'd love to hear of a GIII as much as anyone but there's a possibility that Bill Murray might not be to blame. Perhaps the script isn't up to the first film's standard. If I was a well established actor and someone sent me a script with the quality of Ghostbusters 2, I'd likely pass too
