Bethesda hiring 'Future Generation Console Programmers'

Posted Feb 27th 2012 2:00PM by JC Fletcher

Bethesda Game Studios is looking toward the future, hiring for "Future Generation Console Programmer" positions. We should be clear: these jobs are for working on "an unannounced game on future-generation consoles." They're not for future generations of people. In fact, you need 5 years of development experience, so not being born yet is actually a big disadvantage.

The listing doesn't give much of a clue as to the technology Bethesda is targeting with its future Elder Scrolls or Fallout or whatever -- applicants need experience programming for PS3 and Xbox, and DirectX 11 experience is "a plus."

"PS3 and Xbox"
It's confirmed, a joint console between Sony and Microsoft.

I'd be surprised if it wasn't coming for this generation (and probably Wii U) personally, what with having just developed a new engine on current generation hardware.

@Granger

lol "new engine"

It's still the same craptacular Gamebryo, and they're just going to port it and update it without fixing any of the horrendous problems with it.

@HisOmniscience

Just to clarify, it used a new engine entirely (creation engine), not the Gamebryo engine.

To be perfectly fair, the Creation Engine has foundations in Gamebryo - an engine Bethesda has used since its Netimerse days, and has heavilly *HEAVILLY* modified over the years.

But to say the Creation Engine is Gamebryo is as foolish as saying Valve's Source Engine is just the idTech 1 engine because it has remnants of Quake code.

Obvious at this point in time. The wii U is already coming, and the ps4 and Next xbox can't be far behind it.

Wouldn't be surprised if Fallout 4 is a major launch era title for some of them.

Bethesda is in search of new, innovative ways to make large, rich worlds seem like they're populated by clones of the same ten people.

my classmate's sister-in-law makes $79 hourly on the internet. She has been fired from work for five months but last month her pay check was $21393 just working on the internet for a few hours. Go to this web site and read more ----> http://qikr.co/5ygvn

"experience programming for PS3": With Bethesda that means that you have to know how to spell 'PS3' and possibly be able to turn one on.

Wish I could do this. I have tons of programming experience but never programmed a game. Just think it would be amazing to write software for Bethesda.

@Prince David

I don't understand how people even get started in the industry. "applicants need experience programming for PS3 and Xbox" -- that already limits the amount of people right there. Just look for resumes of people who got canned at all those studios in the UK and Australia. Lol.

It's just a way to weed out people who aren't serious. If someone is genuinely obsessed and talented and confident with their work that will shine through even if the person has no experience

I doubt that. They probably really do want people with direct experience. Budgets are tight. I don't think many companies can afford to tutor people with lots of ambition but little skill. Getting entry level positions in desirable fields can be very tough. Sometimes you have to go unpaid in order to get stuff on your resume.

@FlashJS This is exactly why I had such difficulty finding a good entry-level programming job after college. Everyone wants someone to start working RIGHT AWAY! But anyway, I know if you want to get into game programming you at least need to create your own games. You can use tools like XNA to at least get your feet wet.

Judging by the 'quality' of Bethesda titles *cough, cough*, I highly doubt you need that much experience. You could have 5 years of programming the gameboy and they would take you.

@CountNoobula clearly you have never spent a prolonged time with the construction set to see how much work is involved in making a single well done zone, including scripts nav meshes and plenty of natural clutter.

You have to know how to code patches that don't do anything in 75MB+ of code. NOT AS EASY AS IT SOUNDS!!

Just thinking about what a next gen Elder Scrolls or Fallout game would be like boggles my mind. Masses of armies on a field, crowds of people in the cities, etc.

It's amazing how the majority of people that are hating on Bethesda now don't even actually know how coding works, and how coding something so massive is bound to cause errors. Code that doesn't comply with another or interacted inaccurately. So on Bethesda's behalf, sorry things don't go perfectly when developing a game that is larger than any other, MMOs aside. And as another gamer who had absolutely no glitches or bugs with his copy of Skyrim I'm sorry you couldn't enjoy something that's actually worth it's pricetag unlike most. And to those that complain that they got bored after the 40-50th hour of playing...why are you complaining? Most single-player games run around 10hrs on average.
So many ignorant people, yes the game was not perfect, but it was a step in the right direction, especially when games are getting more expensive.

I've been a professional software engineer for well over 10 years. I can't imagine what kind of lame, misguided "coder" it would take to make excuses for the consistent, obvious problems in Bethesda's game engines.
