MCM & Eagle Awards Debut New Comics Talent Competition

For almost a decade the MCM London Comic Con has been a haven for comics, movies, games and anime – and now, together with the Eagle Awards and upcoming Universal Pictures blockbuster Snow White And The Huntsman, they’re looking to the next decade with a prestigious competition for new comic artists and writers.

Judged by Titan Publishing senior editor Steve White, bestselling writer Tony Lee and Eisner-winning artist Mark Buckingham, the ‘Huntsman’s Challenge’ competition calls on comic creators to come up with a fully finished, coloured and lettered five page story with a plot relevant to a dark fantasy setting.

“In just a few years we’ve seen our small Artists Alley turn into a full scale Comic Village, with hundreds of comic creators now attending and exhibiting,” said MCM marketing director Bryan Cooney. “Many of today’s best UK creators started with a table at our shows, growing as we have. We’d like to give that opportunity to the next generation of creative teams.”

Submissions will be accepted from 1-29th February 2012 and our judges will select two winners: one for best design and art, the other for best writing quality. Both creative teams will be nominated for a new Eagle Award, the MCM Expo Award For New Visionaries and have their story included in May’s MCM London Comic Con show programme, printed in conjunction with Snow White And The Huntsman from Universal Pictures, who will also provide a selection of prizes.

Both winners will also receive invites to the 2012 Eagle Awards ceremony and after-party on the Friday of the MCM London Comic Con, along with industry passes to the full London Comic Con weekend and signing slots in the show’s Comic Village.

“Winning an Eagle on your first time out is a story worth telling in its own right,” Cooney commented. “Having tens of thousands of people read your story and having it in print alongside a movie like Snow White And The Huntsman is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

All accepted entries will receive audience invitations to the May 2012 Eagle Awards.

Competition Rules and How to Enter

Entries for the ‘Huntsman’s Challenge’ will be accepted 1-29th February 2012. Entrants must submit a fully finished, coloured and lettered five page story as a 300 dpi jpg or pdf with a page dimension of 170mm (w) x 230mm (h). These entries must have a beginning, middle and end within these pages, with a story relevant to a dark fantasy setting.

Individuals or a team may enter, colourist, artist, writer, creator. however if a member of your team is an established professional it may limit your option for which category you may be eligible for, e.g. if they are an artist you would be restricted to the writers nomination or vice versa.

Content (violence, gore) should be aimed at a max 15 rating.

Entries can be excepted from ANY country, please note invitations for nominees to the awards does not include travel, hotel etc.

Files can be uploaded via our gateway

EAGLES LAND IN NEW EYRIE September 9th 2010

AFTER two years of nomadic existence, the world’s most popular comicbook fan awards have found a new home.

This October the Eagle Awards will take up residency at London’s hugely popular MCM Expo at Excel, where the 2010 awards will be announced.

As of 2011 and going forward, the awards will become part of London MCM Expo’s May event.

While details are still to be finalised Eagles administrator Cassandra Conroy announced, “I’m really pleased to have inked the deal with MCM’s Paul Miley and Brian Cooney, considering that the London MCM Expo is viewed by fans and industry alike as London’s Comic Con the nearest that the UK has to San Diego!”

”It’s been frustrating to have been homeless for the past couple of years and this new arrangement provides the Eagles with long-term stability. It also links us into a partnership with people who are as enthusiastic as I am to make them the industry’s premiere awards,” she added.

For his part, MCM Expo’s Paul Miley said, “We are very happy to now be the new home to the Eagle Awards which we consider to be a great British institution and an important part of comic fandom recognised the world over. I am looking forward to working with Cassandra and the Eagle’s to help take the awards to another level.

”London MCM Expo has a tremendous following from both comic fans and the public as a whole and is supported by many artists and writers which has helped the Comic Village section of the show to grow show on show,” added Miley. “We are likened to San Diego Comic Con in the US all the time by fans and industry pundits which we admit is a great accolade, may be not yet in size but most definitely in stature so bringing the Eagles to Expo helps to cement our position as London’s Comic Con the Eagles are our Eisners.”

Nominations FAQ April 7th 2010

Please read this before emailing.

1. If my entry is in a drop down list does that mean I’m an Eagle Nominee?

No, it means someone has vote for you to be one. Only the 5 most popular will go through to the final vote.

2. Is this the final vote?

No, this is the nominations process. The final vote will begin in a month or so.

3. I voted half an hour ago and my nominations have not appeared in the lists? Why?

Each list item must be checked for profanity, advertising and so on… This process must be done manually and the nomination must each be checked before it is added. This takes time to do and we’ve had several hundred to go through.

4. It says my nomination is verified but they haven’t appeared in the list?

Each nomination is verified against an email address to prevent fraud, vote rigging and cheating. There is still a chance that a problematic entry could get through so each individual entry is checked before it is added to list.

5. Why isn’t [insert comic/creator/company/website here] in the lists?

Either no-one has put it forward for nomination, or we haven’t been able to check it yet.

Eagle Awards Nominations Process Has Begun April 6th 2010

The nominations stage of the Eagle Awards has begun. Go to our nominations page and nominate your favorites for awards.

The nominations process will take roughly a month and then there will be a vote on the 5 most popular nominees. Please note: This is not the final vote!

Please ensure you only nominate for comics published in 2009.

Eagle Awards Postponed For 2008/2009 September 17th 2009

The Eagle Awards have been cancelled for the 2008 vote (to be held in 2009). Failure to acquire a venue for the Eagles due to the scaling back of the Bristol Comics Expo coupled with a lack of nominations which made it difficult to provide fair choices for voting have led to the cancellation.

The Eagles will return in 2010 with a new round of nominations and a re-designed website.
