Deal Was Done Quickly

Dario Gradi has told the club's official web site that he was delighted with the deal, which saw Luke Varney complete a £2 million switch to Charlton Athletic. Varney penned a four-year deal at the Valley and Dario has told us that the transfer went through relatively smoothly and quickly.

Dario told crewealex.net: "The deal was done very quickly and that is the way it should happen. There wasn't an agent in sight and everyone was happy with the deal. We were happy, Charlton were happy and I know Luke was happy with the deal.

"Alan (Pardew) rang me out of the blue really and asked me about Luke. It was a surprise because I had no indication that they were interested before. I said what we wanted for him and then we discussed his strengths and his weaknesses.

"Alan then informed me that the Charlton chairman would contact me and I funnily enough I taught him when I was a teacher. I spoke to him about Luke and just told him that if I had £2 million I would buy him. They then came back and said they would do a deal.

"Charlton are a good club and Alan is a good manager. He is a forward thinking manager and I'm sure Luke will improve there, playing with and against better players. I really think he is good enough and there is still room for improvement in him.

He added: "My reputation is on the line and I told Charlton about what Luke can and cannot do. I wouldn't have made things up to get a sale and I know that Alan has been pleased with the impact Madjid (Bougherra) has been able to make there."
