Tibet Film Festival 2009 in London
The festival largely focuses on new films and will feature documentaries filmed undercover in Tibet, material to emerge from both in and outside Tibet in response to the widespread protests which swept across the Tibetan Plateau in 2008, and films that shed light on the little understood system of reincarnation in Tibetan Buddhist tradition as well as films exploring Tibet in relation to its neighbours, particularly India and Nepal. Dreaming Lhasa
Karma, a Tibetan filmmaker from New York, goes to Dharamsala, the Dalai Lama's exile headquarters in northern India, to make a documentary about former political prisoners who have escaped from Tibet. She wants to reconnect with her roots but is also escaping a deteriorating relationship back home. One of Karma's interviewees is Dhondup, an enigmatic ex-monk who has just escaped from Tibet. He confides in her that his real reason for coming to India is to fulfill his dying mother's last wish, to deliver a charm box to a long-missing resistance fighter. Karma finds herself unwittingly falling in love with Dhondup even as she is sucked into the passion of his quest, which becomes a journey into Tibet's fractured past and a voyage of self-discovery.

Tibet: Beyond Fear
With opening words by Richard Gere, this film documents the remarkable courage of Nawang, a 13-year-old Buddhist Nun and Bagdro, a 20-year-old Buddhist monk who lead freedom demonstrations against the Chinese occupation of Tibet. Following a brutal military crackdown, they're arrested and endure horrific torture until a global movement spearheaded by Amnesty International and International Campaign for Tibet culminates in their release. Through the power of a positive mind and inspired by the Dalai Lama, Bagdro and Nawang forgive their former torturers as they find a way beyond fear.

Leaving Fear Behind
2008 - Leaving Fear Behind (in Tibetan, Jigdrel) is a heroic film shot by Tibetans from inside Tibet, who longed to bring Tibetan voices to the Beijing Olympic Games. With the global spotlight on China as it rises to host the XXIX Olympics, Tibetans wish to tell the world of their plight and their heartfelt grievances against Chinese rule. The footage was smuggled out of Tibet under extraordinary circumstances. The filmmakers were detained soon after sending their tapes out, and remain in detention today.

Fire Under The Snow - 33 yrs of torture survived by a Tibetan monk
Palden Gyatso, a Buddhist monk since childhood, was arrested by the Chinese Communist Army in 1959. He spent the next 33 years in prison for the "crimes" of peaceful demonstration and refusal to denounce his apolitical teacher as an Indian spy. He was tortured, starved and sentenced to hard labor. He watched his nation and culture destroyed, his teachers, friends and family displaced, jailed or killed under Chinese occupation.

Fire Under The Snow reaches back to Palden's birth in 1933 and follows him through the Orwellian nightmare that began with the Chinese invasion. We cut back and forth between the past and Palden's present as an activist, living in exile. Our P.O.V. becomes a "third eye" hovering over Paldens current life, haunted by his memories of the past. We explore the escalating cycle of interrogation and physical violation during his years in prison that ended decades later with Palden's escape from Tibet and a cathartic meeting with His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

The Future of Tibet: Dialogue Between Lodi Gyari & Harry Wu
2009.03.25 - The 50th Anniversary of the exile of the Dalai Lama focuses international attention on Tibet. Just last year anti-government protests across the Tibetan Plateau led to violent crackdowns. This year, Tibetans have boycotted celebrations of the Tibetan New Year in memory of the victims affected by that violent suppression. The official dialogue to address these and other problems has shown no promise in recent years. Can talks between the Dalai Lama and the Chinese government lead to real progress?

2,000 Tibetans protest in Ragya
2009.03.22 (Phayul) - Around 2000 Tibetans came out on the streets of Ragya yesterday immediately after the news of a Tibetan monk's death spread among the residents. Protest demonstrations were carried out in front of the local police station and government offices. The angry protesters managed to snatch from police the Tibetan national flag that was earlier confiscated by the Chinese officials.

The protest was sparked by the death of Tashi Sangpo, aged 28, who took his own life by jumping into Machu river yesterday after authorities allegedly found leaflets and the banned Tibetan flag from his room. Tashi was a monk of Ragya monastery which has remained under complete lockdown since March 10 when leaflets containing political messages were circulated in the monastery and the banned Tibetan national flag was hoisted atop the monastery's main prayer hall. more>

Tibet rally in Taiwan
2009-03-14 (Reuters) - Hundreds of Tibetans and their supporters march in Taiwan to mark the 50th anniversary of the Dalai Lama's flight from Lhasa. Protesters wearing yellow headbands waved Tibetan flags and chanted 'Free Tibet' and 'We Want Justice' as they marched in central Taipei. On March 10, 1959, Chinese authorities quashed an uprising led by the Dalai Lama, which forced him - and many Buddhist men and women - to flee Tibet. The Dalai Lama marked his 50 years in exile on Tuesday (March 10) by demanding "meaningful autonomy" for his Tibetan homeland, where Chinese authorities have tightened security to stifle protests against their rule.

U.N. GENEVA / CHINA HRC (1.49)
2009-02-09 Canadian Ambassador Louis-Martin Aumais: "Canada is deeply concerned about reports of arbitrary detention of ethnic minority members including Uighurs, Tibetans and Mongols, as well as religious believers including Falung Gong practitioners without information about their charges, their location and well being"

Western countries, such as Canada, and the United Kingdom expressed deep concern about China's crackdown on political dissent, lack of press freedom and the rights of ethnic minorities such as Uighurs and Tibetans.

China responded by saying that it was reviewing its policies on education through labour, and the number of crimes subject to the death penalty. However government officials insisted that the number of cases of torture was declining, censorship did not exist and that the government did not harass the media. text

7th UN HRC Session in Geneva (remarks on Tibet) (4.22)
2008-03-25 The situation in Tibet was raised in the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Tuesday. It came up in a general debate on the implementation of the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action adopted at the World Conference on Human Rights. Chinese representatives repeatedly interrupted speakers from the United States, Australia and a number of non-governmental organizations saying that the issue should not be discussed under the umbrella item, but under another point on the Council's agenda dealing with "country-specific issues."

Ambassador Tichenor said restrictions on the access of foreign media to Tibetan areas of China run counter to China's Olympic bid commitments The US urged China to respect its citizen's rights to peacefully express their political and religious views and to release monks and others "detained solely for the peaceful expression of their views" Speakers on behalf of Canada, Australia and Amnesty International were among those expressing concern about the situation in Tibet. Dayan Jayatilleka of Sri Lanka, speaking on the propriety of raising the issue on the agenda item under discussion urged the Council's President not to listen to what he described as a "cacophonous mob". Tenzin Kayta of the Society for Threatened Peoples urged the Council to hold a Special Session to adopt concrete measures to halt the systematic human rights abuses inflicted on the Tibetan people. He said the Council should send a fact-finding mission to Tibet to assess the situation on the ground.

American Foreign Policy Brought to You by China: Advisers to Obama, McCain Tied to US Multinationals that Profit from Beijing
2008.08.05 - Ken Silverstein: "Well, I know that when I first talked to Brookings, I contacted Bader through the Brookings Institute, which receives an enormous amount of money from John Thornton, who is a former CEO of Goldman Sachs and himself has a lot of direct financial stakes in China—he's the primary funder of the China program at Brookings, which is named after him, so that's another story. But I contacted Brookings, and I contacted the Obama campaign, and when I talked to Brookings, I mentioned—you know, I was told by someone at Brookings that "We prefer not to have the Stonebridge label disclosed." Now, they might say, "Well, it's because, you know, we're Brookings, and we want more credit for Brookings," but it seemed to me that it was quite clear that they preferred not to mention Stonebridge in talking about Bader". Dispatches /undercover in Tibet/
2008-03-31 - As Tibetan protesters take to the streets in the biggest and most bloody challenge to Chinese rule in nearly 20 years, Dispatches reports on the hidden reality of life under Chinese occupation after spending three months undercover, deep inside the region. To make this film, Tibetan exile Tash Despa returns to the homeland he risked his life to escape 11 years ago. Risking imprisonment and deportation, he uncovers evidence of the "cultural genocide" described by the Dalai Lama. He finds the nomadic way of life being forcefully wiped out as native Tibetans are stripped of their land and livestock and are being resettled in concrete camps. Tibet reveals the regime of terror which dominates daily life and makes freedom of expression impossible. Tash meets victims of arbitrary arrests, detention, torture and "disappearances" and uncovers evidence of enforced sterilisations on ethnic Tibetan women. He sees for himself the impact of the enormous military and police presence in the region, and the hunger and hardship being endured by many Tibetans, and hears warnings of the uprising taking place across the provinces now.

Lhadon interviews Jamyang Norbu (part 1)
2007.09
Interview with Jamyang Norbu for Beijing Wide Open.

Independent Tibet: Some facts
Before the Chinese Communist invasion of 1950 Tibet was a fully functioning and independent state. It threatened none of its neighbors, fed its population unfailingly, year after year, with no help from the outside world. Tibet owed no money to any country or international institutions, and maintained basic law and order. Tibet banned capital punishment in 1913 (mentioned by a number of foreign travelers [1]) and was one of the first countries in the world to do so. There is no record of it persecuting minorities (e.g. Muslims [2]) or massacring sections of its population from time to time as China and some other countries do – remember Tiananmen. (more)

Free Tibet! Great Wall Banner
2007.08.08 (Phayul) - Executive Director of Students for a Free Tibet Lhadon Tethong was arrested today by the Chinese Police in Beijing when she tried to meet International Olympic Committee officials visiting the city for the one-year countdown to the 2008 Olympics. The Tibetan independence activist has been in Beijing for the past one week risking her life to "investigate and expose Tibet-related Olympics Propaganda in lead up to One-Year Countdown". Latest reports on her blog www.beijingwideopen.org (specifically created for the purpose), says that she has been repeatedly trying to meet IOC President Jacques Rogge since Tuesday to talk about Tibet and human rights issues. On Tuesday, six activists from the Free Tibet group were detained for hanging a huge banner on the Great Wall of China outside Beijing, which lasted for two hours. The banner read- "One World, One Dream, Free Tibet 2008".

Boycott Lenovo,... Companies worry about brand damage
2008.04.26
Companies are starting to be enormously worried about brand damage. Clearly a lot of companies are trying to disassociate themselves from the whole event. I mean, the Olympics games are becoming almost a dirty word amongst the business community." Zenkoji temple, a key site when Nagano hosted the Olympics, pulled out as a relay starting point, citing followers' anger over China's crackdown in Tibet. The relay now will start in a parking lot, while runners for the most part will be out of spectator sight. Professor Hama says rather than the Games punctuating China's global arrival, events so far have been a PR nightmare.
