Guyana: Olympic Tradition

Competed as British Guyana from 1948 to 1964. Was the only South American nation to honor the African boycott of the 1976 Olympics.

James Gilkes
(pronounced “Jilks”), a sprinter who attended Southern Cal, begged the IOC to allow him to compete anyway but was denied permission. Four years later in Moscow, Gilkes won his two qualifying rounds of the 100m in times that would have earned him a medal, but slowed in the semis and missed qualifying for the final by one-tenth of a second.

Sent six athletes to Moscow in 1980 and won its only Olympic medal – boxer Michael Anthony’s bantamweight bronze. Has sent athletes to every Games since.
