Montreal May Day demonstration 2012May Day, a traditional labour holiday around the world, will be a day of protest in Montreal. Students, backed by Quebec’s big unions, are gathering outside Premier Jean Charest’s office on McGill College to continue their 12-week fight against tuition hikes. Later in the afternoon, anti-capitalist anarchists demonstrated near Champs de Mars on the edge of Old Montreal. The Gazette’s Roberto Rocha, James Mennie, Monique Muise, Sue Montgomery, Dario Ayala and Allen McInnis will follow the marches live throughout the day in words, images and videoMay 1, 2012
April 27: Students protest Charest's tuition proposalStudents opposed to tuition hikes are taking to the streets of Montreal again Friday night, the third in a series of late-night demonstrations that have brought thousands to the streets of downtown, police in tow. The theme of Friday’s event is “c’est pas une offer, c’est une insulte” (that’s not an offer, that’s an insult) is a response to the government’s proposals to students, made public earlier in the day in Quebec City by Premier Jean Charest and Education Minister Line Beauchamp. Negotiations between the government and three student groups have broken down because the government refuses to negotiate with the CLASSE, an organization it alleges is behind an upswing in violence and vandalism, but which nonetheless represents about half the 180,000 students who have been boycotting class for 11 weeks now. The government’s offer includes $39 million more for bursaries, increased eligibility for students loans and phasing in the hike over seven years rather than five. But students on the street want tuition frozen at 2012 levels.Apr 28, 2012
Montreal students stage 12-hour protest against rising tuition feesEarly in a 12-hour protest marathon that began shortly after 7 a.m. Wednesday, students protesting tuition hikes blocked entry for employees at the National Bank head office – before Montreal police using chemical irritants opened the way for employees at that downtown office tower to get into work. Meanwhile, other students blocked the Viau Bridge in the north end, creating rush-hour commuter havoc. Demonstrations from Victoria Square are planned to depart hourly until 7 p.m., in what has become the longest-ever student strike in Quebec historyApr 11, 2012
