Two S. Korea retailers halt US beef sales over mad cow

Two major South Korean retailers Wednesday suspended sales of US beef after a new case of mad cow disease in California.

Lotte Mart said the sales had been halted at its 95 outlets.

"From today, we have suspended sales of all US beef, reflecting consumer concerns. We will take our next steps after watching government action," a spokeswoman told AFP.

Home Plus, a local unit of Britain's Tesco, took similar steps.

US authorities on Tuesday reported the country's first case of mad cow disease in six years. They stressed there was no danger that meat from the affected dairy cow would enter the food chain.

South Korea will take "appropriate" steps after checking details, the agriculture ministry said, adding the latest case was not directly connected to beef that can be imported by South Korea.

"If necessary we can strengthen quarantine and inspections or ban imports," a ministry official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Under a bilateral pact, South Korea only imports beef from cattle younger than 30 months and bars tissue seen as carrying a risk of spreading the disease.

US beef has been a highly contentious issue in recent years.

After barring US beef in late 2003 following a mad cow case, Seoul agreed in 2008 to resume most beef imports.

The decision sparked a weeks-long wave of mass street protests. Rallies were ostensibly about the dangers of mad cow disease but assumed a general anti-government tone.

They died down after Seoul announced it would restrict imports from cattle seen as more susceptible to the disease.

South Korea imported 107,000 tonnes of US beef last year, 37 percent of total imports of the meat, according to the agriculture ministry.

Our government and the U.S. beef industry will take steps to prevent mad cow from infecting the U.S. beef supply and get the mad cow infected beef out of the U.S. food supply...only if other countries stop buying our beef out of concern about mad cow disease. South Korea is actually helping the American people keep the U.S. food supply safe.

Oh this is wonderful---now no one else will eat our beef so the prices will go down and Americans will rush in and contaminate themselves with the prions that cause Mad Cow Disease and Alzheimers. Isn't that just like the USDA to lie to everyone about what's in our food and it ends up killing our people. Stay away from beef if you care about your health.

The next time a car or an imported product comming to the US is found to be defective we need to stop imports until that country can assure us their product is safe. Then we can call it free trade or equal trade.
