More plaudits for King Kev

Posted on: Wed 14 May 2008

KEVIN Phillips' 'goal-studded' season has earned him the club's official Player-of-the-Year Award.

The former England striker was voted Albion's top performer by the management staff and his team-mates, with ever-popular left-back Paul Robinson and midfield goal machine Robert Koren finishing as runners-up.

Phillips' stunning return of 24 goals from just 30 starts this term, plus his impressive all-round displays, were certainly not lost on his team-mates.

And he incredibly finished as the Coca-Cola Championship's second top scorer - despite missing six weeks of the campaign with a career-threatening knee injury.

Boss Tony Mowbray said: "It means a lot to any player when their team-mates appreciate and respect the contribution they've made.

"I would say it's not just Kevin's performances during games that have won him this award, but also his personality and manner around the training ground.

"Hopefully, he will also be high in the running for the Player-of-the-Year Award next season."

This is the latest in a long sequence of honours Phillips has had bestowed upon him this term.

His goals earned him the December Powerade Player-of-the-Month Award for the division.

The 34-year-old collected an even bigger accolade in March when he won the FourFourTwo Player-of-the-Year prize in the Championship.

Phillips reached another milestone later that month when he celebrated his 200th career league goal by opening the scoring against Crystal Palace.

He was also named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year and finished as the No.1 striker in the 2007/08 Actim Index - the official player ratings system of the Championship - coming runner-up in the overall player rankings.

Meanwhile, defensive midfielder Joss Labadie has won the club's Young-Player-of-the-Year Award after getting the nod from the Academy's coaching staff.

"It goes without saying that with Joss being the only second year scholar we've offered a pro contract to, picking a winner of this award was much easier than last year," said Academy coach Michael Appleton.

"Not only has Joss made big improvements while playing for the youth team, he has also made several appearances for the reserves which suggests he's going down the right road.

"He knows - and we've told him - he's got a hell of a lot of work to do to get anywhere near the first team.

"But he knows the areas of his game he's got to work on.

"He's a level-headed lad and I'm sure he will give it his best shot."
