  3. There's been a lot of buzz this morning about Thomas Mann & Norm Ornstein's op-ed on the Republican Party in The Washington Post. What are your thoughts?
    • David McPhee, Sarah Trimmer and 9 others like this.
      • Scott Kidd The GOP has become an insurgent outlier in American politics. It is ideologically extreme; scornful of compromise; unmoved by conventional understanding of facts, evidence and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition.

When one party moves this far from the mainstream, it makes it nearly impossible for the political system to deal constructively with the country’s challenges.
      • Jeremy Royer Thank you Brookings Institution for everything.
      • Gregg R. Baker
There is a tendency for the extremes to backfire and get pulled back to the center. Recall the Contract On America, and anti-Iraq war sentiment during the Bush II Administration. Recall McCarthyism. Over time, tho, the Republicans have v...eered enough to the right that when they get yanked back to the center, the center has moved to the right also. That is why we need a progressive party. Not a democratic party of liberals. But a progressive party for progressives. No "moderate factions," no "getting out in front of the Republicans to outspend (on military and corporations), and outcut the budget (on social programs)." No union busting. Just progressives, running a progressive party. Once we have a viable progressive party, we can start to reclaim the political center somewhere in the center. Imagine that.See More
