Man arrested over £573,000 cannabis haul
A MAN has been arrested in connection with £573,000-worth of drugs seized during a police raid in Lesmahagow.
The 54-year-old is in custody following the search of premises at an industrial estate in Teiglum Road at around 9am yesterday.
Strathclyde Police raided the property on a warrant and discovered a large quantity of cannabis plants.
A report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal and the man is due to appear at Lanark Sheriff Court today.
Meanwhile, Lothian and Borders Police said around £135,000-worth of cannabis was seized during two raids in Edinburgh last week.
The first haul, worth around £115,000, was discovered at a property in Forrester Park Gardens on Thursday, as was £1,795 in cash.
A 22-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with the discovery. He appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Friday and was released on bail.
The following day around £20,000-worth of plants were seized in the city’s Roseburn Street.
Police say no one has been arrested in connection with the seizures and that they are trying to trace those involved.
A force spokesman said: “These discoveries serve to highlight the continued use of residential premises for cannabis cultivation, and we would encourage anyone who suspects that a property in their neighbourhood is being used for this purpose to contact police.
“Properties that have been converted to cultivate cannabis will produce large amounts of heat, continually use strong lighting and will likely have their curtains closed or windows blacked out.
“To provide the necessary power for a cannabis cultivation, growers often tamper with electricity circuits, which increases the risk of electrocution or fire, and the chemicals produced during the cultivation process can also be incredibly hazardous.
“The proceeds of these operations line the pockets of serious and organised criminals whose activities spread misery in local communities, and we welcome any information that can help us identify and dismantle cannabis cultivations.”
