The power of the Web with Opera Mini 4

After three betas we're proud to release the shiny new Opera Mini 4 to the world.

We've done a lot with this new Opera Mini. For example, we rewrote the entire code for Opera Mini 4 and added lots of improvements and new features to make the browser even better.

Opera Mini 4 is based on the same rendering engine as the Opera 9.5 desktop browser. The browser still has a very small install size, less than 100k, even though we've added all these cool new features.

With all the time and work that we've put in on our end, we wouldn't be able to bring you the world's best mobile browser without your help and support. We owe a great amount of appreciation to all those of you who helped with our beta testing, bug reporting, and providing feedback in the Opera Mini forums and on your blogs. Thanks.

So what have we done with Opera Mini 4?

Opera Link

We've added support for Opera Link in Opera Mini 4. With Opera Link, you're able to instantly synchronize and share your bookmarks and Speed Dial with the Opera browser for your computer.

Overview mode

Opera Mini 4 includes a new rendering architecture that allows you to view webpages just like you would on your computer. When you first load a webpage, Opera Mini will show you an overview snapshot of the page; using the new mouse cursor you can instantly zoom in to the selected region of the page.

Size of text fits width of screen

Opera Mini 4 dynamically changes the size of the text on webpages to fit the width of your phone's screen, meaning you won't have to scroll horizontally.

Context menu

A context menu is displayed when pressing the number 1 key. From the context menu you could change the viewing modes to 'Mobile view', reload the page, and show webpage information. When the mouse cursor is focused on a link, the Context menu will show you the link information (i.e. where the link points to, etc.).

Mouse cursor

With the mouse cursor you could scroll to any direction on the page and more easily click on links.

Scrolling shortcuts

Pressing these number key shortcuts will help you quickly navigate around the page.

2 - Page up
8 - Page down
4 - Go to the left one column
6 - Go to the right one column
5 - Zoom in and out

Create search

With this new feature, you could add any search engine of your choice to the Opera Mini start page. To add a new search engine, click on the search field, press the menu button and click on the 'Create search' option.

View pages in Landscape mode

By pressing the * and # shortcut keys, you could switch the page view to landscape mode.

New standards support

Support for HTML tables, CSS handheld stylesheets, and more advanced support for CSS have been added to Opera Mini.

Bi-directional support

With this new release we've also added support for bi-directional text, adding support for languages such as Hebrew.

Some other notable changes

Added support for small anti-aliased bitmap fonts
Simplified setup process
Improved image quality
Improved fit to width mode rendering
Simplified settings page
Added native blackberry menu
Dialogs are now displayed with round corners and alpha channel overlay windows
New and improved server side cookie handling

Link really makes sense, made it super easy to get my preferred bookmarks. I guess it would make sense to synchronize custom searches between desktop and mini aswell. The feed management buttons (edit/remove) are very helpful. Superb update!

OM4 is already available in your own language smile

Any changes between Beta 3 and the full version? It's still impossible to Watch something (like this thread) without leaving a comment.
But still, party

Is it just me or is there again no horizontal scroolbar in mobile view again? Cheers. Now everything is perfect.

I still have some bugs in OM4 like OM4 occationally crashes when I try to add the current page to bookmarks and some of the feeds remain locked to the feedreader, even when I unsubscribe. I had bad luck with the feeds. Had to re-setup all my feeds as it reset the feeds upon installation of OM4. I dont doubt how much of use it would be to sychronize feeds as well.

All in all, OM4 rocks and thanks to the OM team for finally bringing the full web to my hands.

Andresandresruiz Wednesday, November 7, 2007 3:23:39 PM

Thanks a lot, can we see a changelog since mini beta 3?

rolinux Wednesday, November 7, 2007 3:41:47 PM

Why can I delete the "Opera Mini Blog" and "Opera Community News" feeds in opera mini 4?

I hope is a bug and not that we are forced to keep them.

Regards

Johan Schönjohansch Wednesday, November 7, 2007 4:08:24 PM

rolinux: that is indeed a bug (on the server side, so no
client update is necessary when it has been fixed).

andresruiz: the changelog from beta 3 is coming a bit
later.

Robin_reala Wednesday, November 7, 2007 4:54:10 PM

Still no way of migrating bookmarks from OM3?

RomanArt-Roman Wednesday, November 7, 2007 5:21:24 PM

Yo! It's cool! I have context menus holding the touch screen on my M600, and localized version is too useful of course. Thanks a lot!!!

Soumitrasoumitram4u Wednesday, November 7, 2007 5:46:37 PM

Thanks for Opera Mini 4. up

-( + )-Dasch Wednesday, November 7, 2007 5:53:03 PM

@Robin: mini 4 imports the bookmarks from mini 3 automatically. On my SE W810i in any case.

redpok Wednesday, November 7, 2007 6:14:14 PM

Nooo! It STILL crashes my 3230 like the betas did. Goddamit, what can I do.. I don't want to format my phone and lose all the software & settings I've done.

Gaervern Wednesday, November 7, 2007 6:25:03 PM

imports bookmarks from Mini 3, not from Mini 4 beta. sad

Daniel Goldmandanigoldman Wednesday, November 7, 2007 6:53:29 PM

I believe the importing of bookmarks from Opera Mini 3 to Opera Mini 4 depends on your phone's capabilities.

Zolizoligrg89 Wednesday, November 7, 2007 6:59:41 PM

hey..,
where has the skin choosing option dissapeared? :/
and the photoblog..?

Dark FurieFurie Wednesday, November 7, 2007 7:16:38 PM

They work side by side. yes Best feature yet. wink

Dagenham Wednesday, November 7, 2007 7:42:34 PM

I'm so sad, but it seems, I'll stay with the good old 3.x version... the new one runs very unstable on my phone (for example, on Bloglines mobile page I'm unable to read the feed contents, the builtin RSS reader not working, can't switch off folded content...).

I'm in a hope that bugs will be fixed soon (and I hope, I don't have to replace my oldie phone to enjoy the brand new features).

By the way, thanks for the Opera Mini team for the great work.

vd2k Wednesday, November 7, 2007 9:15:15 PM

great work! I'm going for a test drive!

I checked the other language downloads and I'm not sure what language comes between Dansk and Espanol, nor which language LanguageName actually is.

nihilocrat Wednesday, November 7, 2007 9:44:49 PM

I think it's awesome that the new version runs on my RAZR2 (3 didn't...). My builtin web browser completely mangles a series of company intranet pages which are very useful to access from my phone when I am on pager duty, but Opera Mini displays them clearly.

This brings up an important question (I'm sorry, but I couldn't find the answer elsewhere). I heard that Opera downloads the page on their servers and processes/reformats it for your phone, which is great for publically-available sites. If this is also true for secure sites (like the intranet I mention), this means that Opera accesses these otherwise private pages and keeps it on their servers in order to process it for your phone. I assume that, since people can access their eBay accounts and other sensitive, private sites with Opera Mini, there is some sort of safeguard in place. If there's no such certainty that a secure site is, in fact, as private as it would be when viewing it with any other mobile browser, then I could not safely use Opera Mini to access this intranet.

Thank you OM Team you guys rock!! Opera Mini is the bomb!! party

mumchristmas Thursday, November 8, 2007 12:49:44 AM

OM4 running good on my Blackberry 8700g now,but it still can be improve on Blackberry.
1.Not all the BBs have 'ball' to contral the mouse, most of them are 'wheel'. So why not use 'j' 'k' 'l' 'i' 'm' to contral it?
2.The lost of 'p' & 'q' function makes OM4 harder to use.

Afonsoafonso Thursday, November 8, 2007 12:54:59 PM

Here goes another week searching for the .jar of Opera!! Just because the .jar is useless and you really could post the .jar next to the .jad couldn't you?? So why don't you??

Sami Serolaserola Thursday, November 8, 2007 1:01:23 PM

Afonsoafonso Thursday, November 8, 2007 1:58:42 PM

Wow!Thanks a lot for the .jar . For some reason, my nokia 6630 doesn't fetch jar's out of jad's... Maybe other phones will. Now after installing opera 4 over the previous 3.1 I have to say that: it kept all my settings, including history. During install the phone even asked me if I wanted to maintain previous settings, said yes.Anyhow its mutch faster and lighter in usage than the 3.1, even in beta I was using 4, because of its speed on image rendering.I'll test it moreover to see how some bugs in beta 4 were handled

JohnRobertsjohnroberts Thursday, November 8, 2007 5:51:30 PM

Guys!

Opera Mini 4 final is dead on my Sony Ericsson W810i. Beta 3 worked just fine!!!! What have you changed? It does not install, with an Internet connection failure message (despite the connection icon appearing on the screen...). I tried Opera Mini 3.1.2, Google Maps for mobile, etc., they all work and connect fine. Honestly, can I get beta 3 back please? I am really frustrated, beta 3 seemed so nice...

(P.S.: My carrier is Vodafone Greece )

Tks & Best Regards

<johnroberts_abroad-AT-yahoo-DOT-com>

JohnRobertsjohnroberts Thursday, November 8, 2007 8:47:48 PM

Tks Lali, but w/o results; it seems that if you have an initialized and properly installed beta, it will continue working. If I try to reinstall a beta, I get an error message from the push server to upgrade to the final version...

KYrenKYren Thursday, November 8, 2007 10:38:04 PM

Earlier whenever I opened the OM4 in my 6630 and clicked a bookmark the dialogues "connect to network? and "choose an access point" used to appear immediately, but now it's taking too much time to show these dialogues and I'm not able to delete my comments also using OM4.Plz help.
