Doncaster Markets is once again short listed for the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA) ‘Market of the Year’ Awards in the ‘Indoor Market’ category. Far from resting on its laurels in 2011, Doncaster Council has continued to invest in the markets in order to boost shopper numbers and consolidate its position at the heart of the community. Improvements have included: • Visits to Trade Shows resulting in increased numbers of coach visits
• Four new Markets Ambassadors, a new Markets Superintendent and Business Relations Manager
• Art exhibitions in the Corn Exchange
• Live music every Saturday
• A Purple Voucher discount scheme
• Attractive and colourful outside eating areas
• Extra signage, banners and pennants
• Extra advertising and promotion as well as a new map and guide
• A new Buy Local’ scheme in bars, cafes and restaurants to promote the use of good quality local produce from Doncaster Market Peter Davies, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “We have had yet another busy and successful year for Doncaster Markets with occupancy levels and visitor numbers continuing to grow. “Traders in the Food Hall took a massive £19.2 million in the last year – a third of all money spent on food in Doncaster Town Centre. That is on a par with Tesco! “Nobody has ever won Britain’s Best Market twice in a row, but we are hoping not to come away empty handed.”
