San Antonio program wins health-care innovation award from Obama administration
A San Antonio program for homeless adults with severe mental illness received a “Health Care Innovation Award” from Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on Tuesday.
The Center for Health Care Services in San Antonio received $4.6 million as part of the first round of national grants by the Obama administration designed to spark innovation in U.S. health care.

More than 1.7 million Texans will receive an average of $194 rebate from their insurance companies, according to a report from the Kaiser Family Foundation, a non-profit private organization that does research and analysis on issues relating to health care.

The “recent indictment of a North Texas doctor who allegedly certified over 5,000 patients for home health in one year, far above the typical 100 per year” serves as an example of poor and fraudulent Medicare billing activity that still persists today. Texas’ proposed adult stem cell regulations, up for approval this week, are under fire for circumventing the Food and Drug Administration and making the experimental therapy commercially available before it’s been proven safe and effective.
The criticism of the Texas Medical Board draft policy, developed in the aftermath of Gov. Rick Perry receiving stem cell treatment for back problems, is coming from a host of pre-eminent scientists and institutions, including the influential scientific journal Nature and the International Society for Stem Cell Research.

Last week the Supreme Court heard arguments concerning the constitutionality of the Obamacare law, focusing on the mandate requiring every American to buy health insurance or pay fines enforced by the IRS. Hopefully the Court will strike down this abomination, but we must recognize that the federal judiciary has an abysmal record when it comes to protecting liberty. It’s doubtful the entire law will be struck down. Regardless, the political left will continue its drive toward a single-payer, government run health care system.
