A change of plans at Valve means we'll get Dota 2 sooner photo

"Our original plan was to spend the next year or so in beta, adding new features and slowly growing the number of heroes until we reached a level of parity with Dota 1, at which point we’d release Dota 2 to the world," writes IceFrog of Valve.

"But the feedback we’re seeing everywhere is that people just want to play it, even though there’s still a ton of heroes yet to be implemented. Welcome to the new plan: We’re going to take the current version of Dota 2, which has The International set of heroes, and get it out there as fast as we can."

I was under the impression that this new plan was the case from day one, so this is very good to hear. The end result is going to be something more publicly iterative: "we’ll be shipping regular updates with more heroes, new features we’ve been working on, and improvements on the existing content as we get more and more feedback."

When Samit inquired about his curious bio photo Jordan simply replied: "bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways. Good to hear. I think more games like this should follow the Minecraft philosophy (ie- get enough features working that the game is enjoyable, then roll out additional features as you get them developed). Not only does it make the wait for the final game much more bearable, but it allows for player feedback on new features--if something ends up not working out as well in practice as it seemed like it would in development, it can be changed or fixed.

Hooray for rushed content

So long all the heroes are in the game, I'm ok with this.

That "Minecraft" philosphy has been done by Valve for years, at free of charge.

It worked with Minecraft so it will work with DOTA 2.

Wait, Valve is releasing a game EARLIER than intended? Is the world ending?

Activision (soon followed by EA, etc) will start doing the same.... only they will charge for every update. In other words - welcome to Orwell's 1984 of videogames.

In other words, Dota 2 will (probably) be free to play with numerous characters coming down the pipeline.

How would they compete against Newerth/LoL/DotA/Blizz's SC2 DOTA mod if they don't?

they've already said they're not going to base their system on buying heroes and rotations and like that.

I'm willing to for a normal retail game, thank you very much...

Kinda figured they would steadily release content anyway, although I thought it'd be after we get the "complete" game first. This is cool too.

tl;dr: we realize our game is completely redundant. If we don't start building a community up and distinguishing it from League of Legends, there are like three people in the office that will off themselves.

Valve wins again! They are so good at what they do, but I think it was there plan all along to make us think beta invites were going to be slowly given out in batches.

Nah, Episode 3 balances it all out. Even though Gabe Newell wrote some haiku's about it's release here recently...

So it is going to be a F2P with micro transactions is what I read from that. Sounds like every other game in the genre right now so I'm not too upset. Could be fun if the community isn't a black hole of hate like I fear.

Didn't they already do this with left 4 dead, released it bare bones, made promises of adding content later. yeah. Then Instead resell it again for another 50 dollars.

This type of thing hardly works unless the people are committed 100% to it. Never pay someone when the job ain't done.
