Bicycle Friendly BusinessUniversity of California, Santa Barbara| Gold Level Business Highlights: University of California Santa Barbara has successfully incorporated the necessary infrastructure, educational classes, and incentivizing programs to qualify as one of the most bicycle-friendly universities in the country. With 10,000 bike parking spots, the university has nearly twice as much bike parking as car parking. They provide a fleet of communal bikes for students and employees. With the help of UCSB’s full time bike coordinator, Bike Week in May is promoted extensively with activities including a commuter breakfast of bicycle shaped pancakes, Volunteer Bicycle Buddies and local Bicycle Coalition Bicycle League Street Skills classes. UCSB partners with the local government trip reduction agency to promote the Curb Your Commuter Team Challenge. Employees form teams of 5 to log trips by alternative means that otherwise would have been made by single occupant motor vehicle. The University has invested a lot of money in secure bicycle parking, including high density, effective bike racks in addition to 40 bike lockers. On campus there are several unique features catering specifically to bicycle commuters, such as over 7 miles of Class I bicycle paths, 7 bicycle roundabouts and 3 bicycle underpasses. The campus is easily accessible by trail, through an established bike route system, or bike lanes on surrounding and internal roads. It offers a fully staffed bicycle repair facility which also functions as a bicycle kitchen for those who want to borrow tools and learn the art of bicycle maintenance. Additionally, students and employees are offered a safe riding skills and maintenance classes through the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition and Bici Centro.
