[Up: Ulysses] [JAJportal] [Robot Wisdom home page]
[this is somewhat preliminary! anyone who feels like further digesting the literature [qv] on this, I'll give full credit.]
New: Joyce's capitals; Joyce's typists; Joyce's deletions, commas, compounds, other punctuation
Here, for contemplation, are instances of Joyce possibly making mistakes in Ulysses. Most are either from Gifford or Gabler/Kidd or Rose or Robert Martin Adams [Senn]. New: [H&K;] = Hart & Knuth's "Topographical Guide to JJ's U"
Note how many are from Ithaca-- Bloom (or the narrator) nodding?
Rose argues: "In May 1922, Joyce wrote to Harriet Weaver: 'In a second edition the mistakes must be corrected. Some of the blunders and omissions which disfigure Ithaca especially are lamentable.'" [cite]
However, Rose fails to acknowledge that 67 of these were itemised by Joyce, and corrected in late 1922. So it's safe to assume he'd proofed it pretty carefully by that point! Most of these are keying-errors like transposed letters, some are dropped words. But Joyce also corrects the date of Mrs Sinico's funeral (from 10 Oct to 17 Oct) and the 'BALANCE' line in Bloom's budget (from 0.16.6 to 0.17.5).
I only see one correction to capitalisation, from Penelope (may to May), and one where two words are (re?)joined into a compound (white polled to whitepolled). There are many changes in commas-- insert, delete, and exchange for fullstop-- and a few to colons and dashes.
cf also: Homer nodding.
And in ch2 most of Deasy's facts are wrong, also Lenehan's account of the horserace in ch14.

Line-numbers in bold are the likeliest candidates for intentional parts of a pattern.
1.181 "looking towards the blunt cape of Bray Head that lay on the water like the snout of a sleeping whale."

3.181 "1904"
1903 (factually). the drafts show '1902' changed ambiguously to 1904, which Gabler accepts because of Gabler's own theory that the Paris trip has been redated to 1904 in the Ulysses timescheme. [JJQ17]
