2011 is the year that Android truly came into its own as a budding games platform, thanks in large part to the explosion of Android device activations and Google's increasing emphasis on compatibility standards.

What this all means for gamers is simple: more on-the-go gaming goodness! In the past it might have been hard to even scrape together 25 Android games to recommend wholeheartedly. But now, this list of must-own titles was paired down from an initial pool of hundreds.

For every game enthusiastically recommended within, another had to be cut. Some quite painfully. Near-misses include top-notch titles like Alchemy, Grabatron, Zenonia, iBlast Moki, and Jelly Defense.

With such a huge and diverse library of games to pull from, our top 25 probably won't look exactly like yours. But rest assured, we have played these titles enough times to drain our Android batteries a hundred times over. These 25 games are among the best on the Marketplace, and deserve a place in everyone's game library.

Pollushot

Released September 06, 2011

Why It Made the List

Pollushot combines casual Angry Birds-esque slingshotting with 2D bullet-dodging. The end result is a quirky arcade title that works surprisingly well. Players use their sling-ship to lob debris at never-ending waves of enemy ships. Every time a shot lands, more debris is thrown off and can be caught for future slingshot use. There's something incredibly satisfying about using a ship's own debris against it as a projectile weapon.
