1994 - Ian Porterfield, Sunderland's goalscoring hero in the 1973 FA Cup final, is appointed as manager of the national side of Zambia.

2003 - French youngster David Belion left the Stadium of Light for Old Trafford for a fee set by a tribunal at £2million after he refused to sign a new contract with the Black Cats.

1925 - Sunderland sold their record League scorer Charlie Buchan to Arsenal for £2,000 plus £100 for every goal he scored in the following season. He scored 21 times for the Gunners, making the fee £4,100.

2006 - A consortium led by former player Niall Quinn bought Sunderland for £10 million. Quinn replaced Bob Murray as chairman.

- Malcolm Crosby is born in South Shields, he managed Sunderland between 1991 and 1993.

1999 - Sunderland's Player of the Century Charlie Hurley is awarded an Honorary Fellowship of Sunderland University.

1967 - In Vancouver, Sunderland play Cerro of Uruguay and come away with a 1-1 draw.

1997 - Sunderland announced that all reserve team games for that season would be played at New Ferens Park, Durham to preserve the pitch at the SoL. This was the first time any Sunderland side would play a whole season outside the city boundary.

- Tony Norman signs for Huddersfield Town on a free transfer. Norman made 227 appearances for Sunderland.

1999 - Leeds United see a bid of £3.5m for Sunderland's Michael Bridges turned down. The Wearsiders accept £5m later in the month. It becomes the highest fee the club has received for one of their players.

2002 - Irish midfielder Sean Thornton signed from Tranmere Rovers for an initial £225,000 fee plus additional appreances based payments.

1994- Bristol City turn down a reported £500,000 bid from Sunderland for left-back Martin Scott. A fee of £750,000 is eventually agreed.  

1996- Tony Coton signed in a player coach role from Manchester United for £600,000 on the same day that Gordon Armstrong moved to Bury after 13 years at Roker Park.

1966 - Roker Park staged its first ever World Cup game; 30,956 spectators turned up to see Italy beat Chile 2-0.

2007 - Michael Chopra signed from Cardiff City for a fee rising to £5 million based on appearances.

2006 - A statue of Bob Stokoe was unveiled by his daughter at the Stadium of Light. Bobby Kerr, 1973 FA Cup winning captain and members of that team were also in attendance.
