Hands-On: 8 of E3′s Biggest Wii U Games (And Netflix)

Game|Life Video: The Mostly Serious E3 Awards Show

We run down the highs and lows of last week’s Electronic Entertainment Expo on today’s Game|Life video.

While this year’s E3 was light on new game announcements and heavy on lowest-common-denominator violence, there were still some bright spots if you looked hard enough. With that in mind, we present this E3 awards show, which is only somewhat facetious. We present Game|Life’s official awards for the categories of E3 that truly matter: Best Headshot, Biggest Flirt, U So Crazy, Biggest Loser and the Grand Prize Winner.

If you don’t want spoilers, stop reading here, because I’d like to take some time to further explain each choice:

Wired Talks Nintendo’s Hits and Flops on G4

I was live on G4 again yesterday talking with G4′s Eric Eckstein and Morgan Webb about the aftermath of Nintendo’s press conference, which started strong with Pikmin 3 and rolled gently downhill thereafter. I think NintendoLand and New Super Mario Bros. U are actually strong titles but they just didn’t have the impact that Nintendo needed this year.

LOS ANGELES — There’s no theme park called NintendoLand, but one of the key launch titles for Wii U imagines what life would be like if there were.

NintendoLand, set to be one of the key launch titles for Nintendo’s new game machine that it will launch later this year, is a collection of 12 minigames that each feature a unique spin on the console’s most distinctive new feature: The “GamePad” controller, which has a large tablet-style screen in its center that can be used to interact with the TV.

Each of the games is a twist on a classic Nintendo franchise; some well-known and some obscure. Wired got to try three of them in advance of the E3 Expo’s official opening.

The Legend of Zelda: Battle Quest is an action game for multiple players that gives them quite different experiences depending on whether they are using the GamePad controller or the standard Wii remote controllers, which work with some Wii U titles.

LOS ANGELES — Suck at Super Mario? Killer mushrooms got you cornered? If you have an expert at hand, they can help you make it through New Super Mario Bros. U.

To be released at the launch of the Wii U console sometime later this year, New Super Mario Bros. U was originally shown at last year’s E3 Expo under the name New Super Mario Bros. Mii. At that time, the only new functionality of the Wii U that the classic-style Mario action game used was the ability to be played on either the TV screen, the Wii U controller’s built-in tablet screen, or both.

At this year’s E3, Nintendo showed a more polished version of the game with a more compelling feature. While a group of players controls Mario, Luigi, et al. on the television screen, another player can sit with the Wii U GamePad and help them out. The player looking at the GamePad will see the same thing the players do, and can tap on enemies to briefly slow them down or tap empty space to create Assist Blocks.
