Opera Mini 6.5 arrives on iOS, Symbian, J2ME and Blackberry

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Just over 3 weeks ago we released Opera Mini 6.5 for Android. The release was the most successful Android Opera Mini release in history! Millions of downloads, thousands of 5 star ratings. up

Now the same great features found in that Android release are available for the 100+ Million Opera Mini users on other platforms.

Opera Mini 6.5 will now show you exactly how much data you have spent and saved. A dedicated page, easily accessible from the help menu inside the Opera Mini, keeps count of how much data you are spending and saving.

The number of megabytes saved while using the Opera Mini browser can directly translate into money saved if you are roaming or on a pay-as-you-go plan for data traffic.

For people on capped data plans, this is a handy feature to make sure you don't max out reaching those slow, punishing network speeds you might encounter after using up your allowance.

Did you ever wonder how much data Opera Mini and Opera Mobile saves users? We did too.

Bounce over to Opera.com to check out the "Total Data Saved" counter clock showing just much data Opera has saved users since today's launch.

So what's new?

The Web is what I do:

We also launched today

Opera Mobile is a full browser with client-side support for JavaScript, HTML5, Flash (Android only) and more. In Opera Mini, the browser engine is running on Opera's servers. Web pages are transcoded and compressed up to 90% before being downloaded to the device, making Opera Mini lightning fast and also much cheaper if you are paying per megabyte.

As always, we welcome your feedback in our forum, and please report any bugs in our bug report wizard. Thanks!

The Opera Mini Team

Well done on the co-ordinated release across all the platforms.
Just a quick question about WebP, Opera's embraced WebP as it's lossy image format of choice and has ported the code over to many platforms (S60, iOS, Android). Will Opera be open source-ing the library's on github?

6.5 java version freece on my Nokia E72! Never had OM freece before! Any update to fix this?

woj-tek Wednesday, November 2, 2011 10:32:33 AM

I wouldn't mind using OperaMini J2ME version on my WinMo phone, but... it still doesn't work properly with hardware keyboard (letters get repeated) which is highly annoying :/

United States of Europeunitedstatesofeurope Wednesday, November 2, 2011 11:10:44 AM

Good to see new thing smile.

3 concerns I want to ask about:

First one is about free browsing on certain pages - those made freely available by GSM operator - I'm wondering how does it work? What should user do in order to use it? Is it compromising privacy of Opera Mini?

Second concern is cell-phone compatibility - Is there anything we, users who download 6.5 instead of proposed - on m.opera.com - 4.4 should know? Asking because it works pretty fine, also I was running 6.1 without any problems for a longer while - still m.opera.com suggests me to use 4.X line. Is there something I missed?

And finally - I'm wondering whether or not saved data counter slightly increases amount of data downloaded from Opera servers. If yes, how much is it?

Thank you for your answers, and have a good day! smile

Sony Ericsson Hazel J20i.

samoht1: please use the S60 version on Nokia E72 (and not the Java version).

Thomas Oneclicksamoht1 Wednesday, November 2, 2011 11:38:27 AM

Okay will do, no probs with S60 up

I used java version because I like the dark background on editor, S60 is white!

СергейGREY58 Wednesday, November 2, 2011 12:56:07 PM

Thanks for update! But in the files manifest.mf and *.jad not enough parameter "MIDlet-Touch-Support: True". Why? This is line hide virtual keyboard on Samsung touch-phones! Every time I write it myself...

P.S. Sorry for Google Translator...

Is it possible to disable this feature somehow? My SE Vivaz shows either only 'Opera' or page title in this bar (similar both for Opera Mobile 11.5 and Opera mini 6.5).

Per Thomas Jahr: I have M7600, but this parameter not exist in all versions for old generation Samsung (including S5230, S3650 and more)

P.S. In Bada-phones it`s changes in settings, but in old phones no settings for java about keyboard. The one possibility to remove keyboard - edit manifest and/or jad

p.p.s. I want opera for windows phone 7, too smile

Opera Mini's Download Manager should be improved! It can't download huge files over 20 MB. It's Download Manager is basic. It should be like UC Browser's Download Manager. But nothing can overtake Opera Mini in graphics. It's graphics are awesome!

Kinda slow in bb os.

Sunyata KuonKuonsunyata Thursday, November 3, 2011 6:07:59 AM

the Opera Mine J2ME 6.5 randomly freezes and shuts down a lot, such a bummer, i don't see the improvement on its stability...sad...i'm using Nokia C3 btw.

David A.darkrabbit Thursday, November 3, 2011 7:59:50 AM

Reverting back to Opera Mini 5, 6.5 like 6.1 renders text in minuscule fashion on the iPhone 3GS.
Is there anyway to change the font size?
I don't care so much it breaks the page but I hate squinting to read.

Thank you for your answers.

Satya Ranjan Mishrasranjanm2002 Thursday, November 3, 2011 8:25:38 AM

I am using SonyEricsson W995i. I am really disappointed by the new version because the software freezes a lot. I don't know what kind of bugs you have fixed but just for the sake of Data usages functionality; the whole software is getting crashed.

On my Nokia it start freezing 2 minutes after I start the program. Freezing last round 2 minutes and then it works fine all day!

Philip Byrnenardis Friday, November 4, 2011 8:00:12 PM

I have the same issue as GREY58. I use a Samsung Monte S5620 and like him have to manually add the Touch-Support parameter in the jad file. If I don't half the screen is taken up with the virtual keyboard. Myself and others have raised this issue before.

The performance of screen scrolling has declined considerably with 6.5. It is now slow and "sticky". I hope you can fix this otherwise I'll have to revert back to 6.1.

You have a great product guys so I hope you can resolve these issues.
Thanks.

СергейGREY58 Friday, November 4, 2011 9:47:40 PM

nardis,
1. Download jad and jar-files on PC
2. Open jad with notepad
3. Add "MIDlet-Touch-Support: True" in the end and save it
4. Download 2 files to your phone and install from Jad
5. That`s All!

United States of Europeunitedstatesofeurope Friday, November 4, 2011 11:31:26 PM

Per Thomas Jahr, can I ask you something?

In the 4.4 release topic you wrote:
"The main focus of this release has been to bring the network features in Opera Mini 4 up to the same level as in Opera Mini 6.5. This opens up new possibilities for your network operator to integrate services like free Opera Mini browsing to certain sites".

Source: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=1133162

Can you shed some more light on the feature? How does it work and how to get that free access if the GSM operator is providing free access to some sites(like facebook)? And finally is that compromising encryption of communication between handset and Opera servers? If not - how wireless carriers can figure out whether or not we are visiting the "free" websites at certain moment?

I'm actually asking about it for third time bigsmile, so I become seriously curious why you keep ignoring that.

Cheers smile

a 'check for update' will be very useful in future releases.
very good browser. runs awsome on nokia 5230

The Saved Pages feature doesn't work on my iPod Touch 3rd Generation.

It worked at first, then I went to the Data Usage page and it doesn't work anymore. I tried restarting (twice) and it still doesn't work.

This feature is the reason why I use Opera on my iPod Please Fix!!!

If your operator provides it in co-operation with us, there's nothing you need to think about. It's all happening automatically. Also, I'm not sure if we say too much about how it works. smile

Hello!

Nice to see someone is reading users comments smile).

Back to the feature: Does Opera servers send in feedback that particular Mini user is browsing for example "my.opera.com/" to wireless carriers, and the latter proceeds with that information in order to account the transfer free? Would you mind to explain how it works in simple terms? smile

What I found important, is privacy concern, for instance whole idea seems to be quite problematic in countries such as Iran or Ukraine(where the governmental censorship has been brought back recently) and surprisingly many others. In simple terms: how about privacy when the wireless carrier is not the users preferable confessor ;-)? It's quite common privacy concern - especially if it's going to work besides users knowledge. Let's remind the recent Electronic Arts "Origin(R)" failure, where users refused to play "Battlefield 3" in order to manifest their dissatisfaction with tracking system included in the software. Would be nice to make the feature optional.

Thank you for your answers. Have a good day smile!
