Royals aim to extend ten contracts

Posted on: Sun 06 May 2012
Reading FC are aiming to keep ten players at Madejski Stadium this summer after their contracts came to a conclusion.

Ian Harte is in talks over a new deal, while double promotion-winner Brynjar Gunnarsson is also in discussions with the club about his role and the options open to him. Young pros Nick Arnold, Michael Hector, Charlie Lossaso and Gozie Ugwu are also set to continue their development with us.

Among those departing are Andy Griffin, Brian Howard and Tomasz Cywka, while a number of young players are also moving on, and all go with our very best wishes.

Director of Football Nick Hammond said, "On behalf of everyone I wanted to thank every single player for their contribution to the club.

"There are so many examples, right from Andy Griffin, who was Brian's first signing, up to Tomasz Cywka who made an impact this season both on the pitch and with his personality around the group, but it is not just those two, everyone goes with our very best wishes and gratitude."

Ian Harte

Discussions underway: Nick Arnold, Brynjar Gunnarsson, Ian Harte, Jonathan Henly, Michael Hector, Charlie Losasso, Matt Partridge, Dean Santangelo, Gozie Ugwu, Josh Webb.

Brian Howard

Contracts not extended: Cedric Baseya, Tomasz Cywka, Cameron Edwards, Ethan Gage, John Goddard, Andy Griffin, Brian Howard, Simon Locke, Carl McHugh, Jack Mills, David Murphy, Frankie Raymond, Jacob Walcott. Scholarships not extended: Dan Carr, James Murphy.

Goalkeepers Henly and Santangelo, as well as defender Partridge and midfielder Webb, are all moving up from scholarship agreements to become professionals for the first time. Striker Dominic Samuel also signed pro forms earlier in the season, and they all helped our under 18s to finish second in their League.

Nicholas Bignall is unfortunately injured with a long-term knee problem but will continue his rehab with our medical team.

Benik Afobe

Benik Afobe and Matthew Connolly have returned to Arsenal and QPR respectively and will train with their clubs ahead of the final two Premier League fixtures this season. Hayden Mullins' loan spell from Portsmouth has of course concluded as well.

A number of players had already extended their contracts earlier this season, including Jay Tabb, Alex McCarthy, Jimmy Kebe, Joseph Mills, Jake Taylor, Mikkel Andersen and Ryan Edwards. All other players are under contract.
