Attorney plans to reverse nativity scene ban

Nativity SceneAn attorney vows to put pressure on the leaders of one California city that chose to ban a nativity scene in a public park.

The Santa Monica City Council agreed to ban all displays in Palisades Park, including a nativity scene that stood for 60 years (see earlier story). Last year, the city implemented a lottery system for displays in the park, and atheist groups set up displays attacking Christianity and Christmas. The city council said that because they could not provide spaces for all religions, removing all displays was the best choice.

William BeckerWilliam J. Becker Jr., an attorney with The Becker Law Firm, is making plans to reverse the decision of the city council.

"Particularly in Santa Monica, the viewpoints of the politicians on the council and of the city attorney are well entrenched so that they are not going to budge on the matter, and so it will take some kind of pressure," he tells OneNewsNow. "I'm not sure whether that would be litigation or some other way of protesting what has occurred, but it will take some kind of pressure to reverse their decision. One of the best ways to try to reverse it would be to vote all of the council members up for re-election out of office, but this is going to take some time."

Becker said the ban is a violation of religious free speech, and the city has no compelling reason to suppress speech in a public forum.
