Carey Mulligan says she and Oliver Stone made sure she wasn’t just the “token girlfriend” in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.

The movie is acclaimed director Oliver’s follow-up to his 1987 film Wall Street, which saw Michael Douglas win an Oscar for his portrayal of the ruthless and greedy corporate raider Gordon Gekko. Due for release later this month, Money Never Sleeps sees Michael reprise his role of Gordon, with 25-year-old British actress Carey playing Gordon’s estranged daughter Winnie.

Carey’s character is dating ambitious proprietary trader Jacob Moore, portrayed by her real-life boyfriend Shia LaBeouf, and the actress admits she initially feared she had been cast in an insignificant role. The star voiced her concerns with director Oliver, and the pair created a strong female character together.

“I didn’t want to be the token girlfriend. I said that to Oliver when we met and he agreed, so we worked to make sure that didn’t happen,” she told Total Film magazine.

Oliver is celebrated as one of Hollywood’s greatest directors, and Carey admits she was nervous about working with such a big name in a movie dominated by A-list actors such as Michael.

She decided to go into the movie with a more forceful, masculine attitude, and that helped her fit in on set.

“I was nervous about working with him. But I thought, ‘I don’t want him to mess with me so if I go in and pretend to be really strong and not afraid, he won’t be able to treat me like a girl.’ So I went in trying to be like a boy - and he treated me like one of the boys,” she added.
