Chemical Weapons team
The Chemical Weapons team of the Embassy provides the United Kingdom representation at the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons
(OPCW), which is based in The Hague. The Ambassador is the UK Representative while other members of the section are Alternate Representatives and advisers.
The OPCW is the Secretariat for the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), which came into force in 1997. The Convention, which currently has 188 member states, bans chemical weapons, obliges States Party to destroy their stockpiles of chemical weapons and their former production facilities; and requires all Parties to accept inspection of their chemical industries to verify that no illegal activity is taking place.
The Chemical Weapons team works to promote effective implementation of the CWC, and to contribute to global security against Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) in support of the FCOs Policy goal on counter terrorism, weapons proliferation and their causes. We present and explain the UK's views to other States' delegations and the OPCW Secretariat, through formal and informal meetings and negotiations, and we co-ordinate closely with Whitehall Departments and agencies in the UK
