Réunion Island Photo: Milky Way Over Piton De l'Eau By Luc Perrot Is Stunning (PHOTO)

Luc Perrot, a physical therapist and astrophotographer based on Réunion Island, a French territory off the coast of eastern Africa, had to wait two years for the perfect conditions to snap this amazing photo of the Milky Way.

The photograph, which is actually 12 images stitched together, shows the Milky Way over Piton de l'Eau, a volcanic crater lake on the small island. In the background is Piton des Neiges, which at more than 10,000 feet is the highest mountain on Réunion Island.

The picture, taken earlier this month, was featured as NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day.

Perrot told HuffPost in an email that the secret to getting a great shot like this lies in knowing your subject, which in this case is, of course, the sky. "It is also essential to master astronomy to anticipate the movement of the stars," he said.

"Photographing the night sky makes me feel like a magician," Perrot wrote. "It reveals to the world the immensity of our universe."

Perrot has lived on Réunion Island since 1999. He recently took third place in The World At Night's 2012 Earth & Sky Photo Contest.

Looks like another phony digital picture funny how much light there is for plants at night. So tired of the use of the term photograph when it's a computer enhanced image put together that's not real to what the actual scene was.

Just think of how many life forms there may be in that photo looking at us and wondering, what if?

While we live inside the Milky Way, this photo looks like we are viewing it from outside the Milky Way. How did he DO that????? And why is the Milky Way curved? From other photos, it appears somewhat flatish with a bump on both sides in the middle??? Wish I knew more. This man obviously has a handle on it. It is stunning.

ejetter, we live out near the tip of one arm of a spiral galaxy--out in the "boonies," as it were. What you see in the photograph probably isn't even a 10th of the entire Milky Way. Also, please remember that a galaxy takes up three dimensions. It's not "flat" like a painting or a drawing; it's more like a sculpture. It's thicker in some spots, thinner in others, so there is variation in how level or curved portions of it seem. We also live in a "fishbowl" of atmosphere, which curves and distorts our view from the Earth's surface.

Do a quick Google search...note that our galaxy is a spiral shape and has many "arms", if you will. This is the view of one of the arms twisting around us.

Aha! This makes more sense than viewing it from the outer edge.

Outstanding job on the blending the twelve phots together to get this. You the man LUC!
Now - how can anyone say there is no life out there amoung all those stars and planets..... How can anyone be so small minded and self-centered to say that? Out there in all that beauty.........WoW

Psalm 19 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them.Yet their voice goes out into all the earth to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun, like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth. The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the Lord are firm and righteous. They are more precious than gold. They are sweeter than honey. By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward. But who can discern their own errors? Forgive my hidden faults. Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then I will be blameless, innocent of great transgression. May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Simply amazing. There are almost endless billions of galaxies, each containing hundreds of billions of stars, and everyday planets revolving around these stars are now being seen by humans. We are so small and insignificant. God's creation is endless and beyond human comprehension. I doubt he needs my praise to be happy. God already has everything!

Absolutely stunning!! What type of camera was used? I wish I could take photographs with that kind of definition.

Unless you live in a very rural area you can't. Most city lights drowned out the true night time sky. You would see more stars in the Sky than grains of sand on all the beaches in the known world.

The guy has spent most of his life refining this photography science and studying astronomy. It will cost you more than a wish to do something like this.
