Freedom of expression attacked during 42nd OAS General Assembly

The 42nd General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) ended on Tuesday, June 5, in Cochabamba, Bolivia, by welcoming the polemic recommendation to reform the Inter American System of Human Rights, presented by Venezuela and Ecuador, that amounts to nothing more than an attack on freedom of expression, said the Los Angeles Times. Letter to OAS supports Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression, opposes proposals to limit human rights system


A group of 16 organizations that belong to the Global Network for Free Expression (IFEX) sent a letter to the Organization of American States (OAS) calling for the strengthening of the regional human rights system, which includes the Inter American Commission on Human Rights, the Inter American Human Rights Court, and the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression. U.S. government calls on Ecuador to guarantee freedom of expression

The U.S. government called on Ecuador to guarantee freedom of expression “and to make sure journalists can work without fear of threats or punishments," reported the news agency EFE. The U.S. government also criticized the case of Ecuadorian journalist Cesar Ricaurte, director of the Ecuadorian NGO Fundamedios, who has received death threats for his criticisms against the government, added EFE.
