Greens for Dinner

share your salad recipes!

I used to think I didn’t like salad, but it turns out I do. Mainly I prefer cooked vegetables to raw ones, but I’ve found that for me, the key to making a pile of greens palatable is to dump a lot of stuff on top of it. And the more food groups the toppings come from, the better.

This is kind of a lot of work for lunch on a random weekday but for summertime dinners, it’s generally a hit with my family.... READ MORE

Catholic Family Fun

a new book to encourage and inspire -- and a giveaway

Just in time for summer, a new book by Sarah Reinhard wants to encourage you and inspire you and help you calm your bad self down.

Catholic Family Fun is filled with ideas that will help families have adventures together and help kids learn to pass the time without a screen in front of their faces. All of this with faith at the core. As Sarah says in her book introduction, “faith and fun are not exclusive... READ MORE

Confirmation Gifts

share your ideas

Have you started celebrating Confirmation in your parish? We have ours next week!

I’m thinking about nice gifts to give—I noticed in our latest edition of Faith and Family magazine an idea to give a framed print or icon of the confirmandi’s patron saint. Other good ideas are a nice book on the Holy Spirit, or a special rosary.

I’d love to hear suggestions for confirmation gifts, especially if you’ve... READ MORE

Easter Feasting

how do you sustain it?

In one of my college theology courses, the professor told us that it would be just as wrong to fast during the octave of Easter as it would be to succumb to gluttony on Good Friday. When the Church tells us to feast, he said, she means it.

I always remember that on Easter Monday. I find it easy to celebrate on Sunday, with the glory of Easter morning Mass and the joy of family dinner and baskets and... READ MORE

Bakin' Bacon

a new-to-me effort-saving approach

I love to eat bacon, but you know what I don’t love? Standing over the stove while it cooks. And that job, never fun, is especially complicated by having to keep multiple young children away from the hot grease.

A few years ago I tried other ways to cook bacon. Microwaving couldn’t give me the crispy texture I like. Baking, according to the most common recipe I found, yielded strips that were nearly... READ MORE

Winter Decorating

Perking up the house after Christmas

When I was a kid I dreaded the end of the Christmas season when Mom took the decorations down. The house looked bereft without them.

As an adult I have more control - this explains why our tree is still up even though it’s Ordinary Time now - but eventually the greenery and twinkle lights must go. On that January day, I’m inevitably left looking around my living room feeling sad at its bareness.

Only... READ MORE

Playmobile vs. Lego

Which do you choose?

In the comments section of our post on gift ideas for boys, there was a lot of talk of Lego’s and Playmobile. I’m curious: does every household with boys choose one or the other?

We have always been a Lego family but I’ve long been enamored by Playmobile. I recently picked up a sweet Christmas set at a yardsale and love it. I’m thinking about getting more but as we already own two tons of Lego’s I’m... READ MORE

Better Than a Glass of Water

How this mom stays hydrated

Every night I take a backpack with me to bed.

It’s heavy and full… of water.

I used to think it would be silly to spend money on a water-holding backpack, but when my doctor restricted my activity during my last pregnancy, my husband convinced me otherwise. He was right. I used to keep a glass of water on my bedside table, but this is so much better.

Hydration packs (I have this one, but there are... READ MORE

Being Nice?

Ideas to share

While I’m not the biggest fan of the word “nice” - there’s so much more to real Christian charity than just niceness - I came across a website today that I thought was… well… nice.

Do One Nice Thing was started by a woman named Debbie Tenzer. According to her Wikipedia article, the movement is responsible for, among other things, donations of 75 TONS of school supplies to children in Iraq and Afghanistan... READ MORE

Mother's Little Helper

Rachel Recommends!

I love hanging pictures. I love that feeling of pushing through the angst of putting a hole—a hole!—in my wall and then having something lovely and soothing and wonderful to look at. It can be scary, committing to hanging something. I went a lot of years not putting anything anywhere because, what if I didn’t like it? What if I messed up? What if I destroyed the entire house in my efforts to beautify?... READ MORE
