  • Guided By Voices Close Out CBGB Festival with Onslaught of New Tunes

    July 8, 2012 10:12 AM ET
     |  Matthew Perpetua

"We showed 'em how to do it then, and we'll show 'em how to do it now," Guided By Voices frontman Bob Pollard told the crowd at New York's Central Park yesterday as his band closed out the first-ever CBGB festival in sweltering heat. Pollard has always been one for on-stage bravado – especially after half a dozen beers or so – but on this particular bill, you had to hope that the other bands were standing at the side of the stage taking notes. The openers &ndas...;  | More »

  • Ronnie Spector Opens One-Woman Show in New York

    July 7, 2012 2:55 PM ET
     |  Michaelangelo Matos

"Phil Spector wanted to erase me from the public consciousness," the producer's ex-wife, Ronnie Spector, said with righteous indignation. The former lead singer of classic 1960s girl group the Ronettes was nearing the end of her spotty but winning two-hour, one-woman show, "Ronnie Spector: Beyond the Beehive," at New York’s City Winery on Friday night. With split-second timing, a man seated to the right of the stage shouted, "He didn't, though!" The biggest cheer of the night...  | More »

  • D'Angelo Woos Stadium Crowd At Essence Fest

    July 7, 2012 12:38 PM ET
     |  Alex Spoto

An impossibly high-pitched "aaahh" ascended from a churchy organ vamp, proclaiming D'Angelo’s arrival on the biggest stage he has played since his legendary Voodoo tour. Clad in rugged boots, leather vest and trademark tanktop (all black), he appeared with a perfect confidence and poise that belied his recently broken 12-year hiatus from the stage. His performance at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans has been anticipated as D'Angelo’s American comeback, but the ...  | More »

  • Kanye West Claims the Stage in Atlantic City

    July 7, 2012 11:18 AM ET
     |  Matthew Trammell

"As a man, I’m not perfect," Kanye West confessed halfway through his set at the lavish Revel Resort in Atlantic City Friday night. "But my music is! I make perfect music!" It was hard to argue. As the already-iconic MC bounced around five albums of material, complete with lavish stage sets and a bevy of dancers, it was clear that West loved his catalogue more than anyone else in the auditorium. "This is the best you’ll ever get it!" Divided into three acts, West’s first so...  | More »

     |  Miriam Coleman

Last night's CBGB Festival show at Webster Hall in New York City was forced to shut down early after a former bassist attacked members of the Cro-Mags in a dressing room, the New York Post reports. At around 8:15 p.m., Harley Flanagan, a founding member of the band who played bass with them for more than a decade, allegedly forced his way through Webster Hall's VIP section toward the Cro-Mags' dressing room. Upon reaching the dressing room, he stabbed William Berario and Micha...  | More »

  • Plan to Tax Coachella Suspended

    July 6, 2012 9:55 AM ET
     |  Rolling Stone

The Indio City councilman who proposed a ticket tax on the Coachella festival relented yesterday after threats of relocation, reports NBC Los Angeles. Council member Sam Torres had suggested a 5-10 percent admission tax on the festival, which was met with severe opposition from Goldenvoice, the concert promoters behind Coachella. Paul Tollett, president of Goldenvoice, threatened to cancel the 2014 festival and move the event away from the city in 2015. Tollett claims the tax would cost Gold...  | More »

  • CBGB Festival Brings Veteran Bands Back to the Stage

    July 5, 2012 12:45 PM ET
     |  Patrick Flanary

First impressions make their mark forever, and guitarist Cheetah Chrome remembers feeling right at home the moment he entered CBGB & OMFUG in July of 1976, arriving from Ohio with his band, the Dead Boys, for their first gig in New York. "I walked through the door and stepped in dog shit," Chrome recalls with a laugh. "We were like Martians in Cleveland. And so when we got up [to New York], we were normal. We had a great audience our first night." Club owner Hilly Kristal was so impresse...  | More »

  • Aerosmith Postpone Gig As Steven Tyler Gets Vocal Rest

     |  Rolling Stone

Aerosmith have postponed their show tonight in Bristow, Virginia as frontman Steven Tyler is under doctor's orders "to refrain from performing to provide vocal rest," as the group wrote on their Facebook page. The show at Jiffy Lube Live has been rescheduled for August 12th, with all tickets purchased for the July 3rd date to be honored. With no word on how long Tyler will be sidelined, he will presumably be ready for Aerosmith's next show in Detroit on July 5th. "Aerosmith regrets...  | More »

  • Louis C.K.'s DIY Tour Offers New Model for Bands

    July 2, 2012 5:05 PM ET
     |  Rolling Stone

Louis C.K. has so much control over his fall tour, he's making musicians envious. The comedian is charging $45 per ticket – exclusively through his own website, and with no service fees – for his trek beginning October 3rd in Cleveland, and he's doing so by avoiding Ticketmaster and other ticketing companies that have exclusive deals with major venues and routinely add service fees. "I'm kind of embarrassed that he did such a great job of it. They basically went...  | More »
