Mearls is an alumnus of Dartmouth College.[1] While at Dartmouth he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity.

He worked as a freelance writer and designer for various gaming publishers for several years before being hired in June 2005 as a designer by Wizards of the Coast. He was a lead developer for Dungeons & Dragons R&D[2] working on the new 4th Edition. During the period from 2000-up until his hiring at WotC, he was one of the most prolific freelance writers in the gaming industry.
