There are a few reasons why I use Linux Mint instead of Ubuntu on my systems. That being said one of the reasons I do not list for using Mint over Ubuntu is their "Software Manager". The software manager in Mint 8 was flat out sad compared to the Ubuntu Software Center that Ubuntu 9.10 included.
HOWTO: Use Ubuntu Software Center in Mint 9
Why Ubuntu is harder than Windows
I use Ubuntu on all my personal computers and I even recommend it to friends. I am starting to think maybe I shouldn't though, because it is obvious:Ubuntu is harder to use than Windows Don't believe me? Read through a few of these comparisons below and I think it will be obvious which operating system is more "user friendly".Installing Software:
Meterpreter for Pwned Home Pages
BackgroundMeterpreter, as I'm sure most of our readers know, is an advanced in-memory payload with tons of useful post-exploitation features. About a year ago, while looking through various buggy, backdoored PHP shells, I decided it might be useful to have some of Meterpreter's networking features in the web's most pwnable language. I started to implement this idea prior to Blackhat last year but got caught up in other projects and let it languish. Last week I dusted it off, cleaned it up and committed the first steps toward a full-fledged Meterpreter in PHP.
HOWTO: Installing Ubuntu Packages Offline
Something that is difficult to do in Ubuntu (and Linux in general) is installing packages on a system without an active internet connection. This is a brief HOWTO for easily installing packages on an offline Ubuntu system. In order to do this you will need another system (preferably something with Linux) that has an active internet connection as well as a flash drive.Step 1 - Manually performing an apt-get update

Netbook MeeGo a NoGo - Review
Now I am all for trying new distros and netbooks are a place where I feel Linux truly outshines all other operating systems, so when a new netbook focused distro comes to maturity I always like to take it for a test drive.

The Four Different Types of Linux Users
In the three years I have been using Linux as my primary operating system I've taken note that in general there are four different types of Linux users. Each one fits a distinct niche and it is possible to change from one type into another over time. The Computer User:

T91MT vs T101MT - Hands on Review
Earlier this month I talked about why I feel Asus's T91MT is a better computer than Apple's iPad. What I failed to mention in that posting is that in addition to the T91MT Asus also has a T101MT netbook/tablet hybrid.

It's Ruby (not turtles) all the way down!
I've found myself repeating those words more than a few times over the last couple months. I've gotten some strange looks, but I've just really started to realize the power that the framework gives you. Because of its plaintextiness, it can be read / hacked / mangled by anybody. In essence, you have full visibility in to what's going on with an exploit and you can debug any problems at the moment you encounter them. Compare that to most tools, and i think you'll see the power. In short, if you can see it, you can hack on it.

N900 Video Call with Skype
If you have graced my page before then odds are you know I love my N900. This past Wednesday Nokia released the PR 1.2 update for the N900 and one of the features they added was support for the front facing camera to make video calls via the VOIP services Skype and Google Talk. I made my first video call this evening on my N900 and it works quite well!

Community Counts: Another Advantage to Linux Mint
A few months back I listed five reasons I thought Linux Mint is a better choice than Ubuntu for a Linux distro. Today I would like to add another reason to that list. With the recent releases of Ubuntu 10.04 and Linux Mint 9 we see something that I feel really makes Linux Mint out shine Ubuntu (yet again):Community input counts.

Introducing Metasploitable
One of the questions that we often hear is "What systems can i use to test against?" Based on this, we thought it would be a good idea throw together an exploitable VM that you can use for testing purposes.Metasploitable is an Ubuntu 8.04 server install on a VMWare 6.5 image. A number of vulnerable packages are included, including an install of tomcat 5.5 (with weak credentials), distcc, tikiwiki, twiki, and an older mysql.

My Beef with the iPad
Now I've written a couple of pieces about the iPad thus far and if you read through them you will see that the device has failed to impress me thus far. Now despite the fact that I think there are better alternatives out there iPad, all in all I don't think it is a bad device per-say (mostly just over priced).

HOWTO: Linux Mint 8 on T91MT
The Asus's T91MT is a fantastic device for many reasons, but one thing I dislike about the device is that it ships by default with only Windows 7. I firmly believe a computer is a terrible thing to waste, so as such the first thing I did was to install Linux on the system when I opened the box. After trying many different flavors of Linux over the course of two weeks I finally settled on Linux Mint 8 as the primary operating system for my tablet device.

Bordeaux 2.0.4 - Hands on Review
Competition is an important part of all markets. It drives innovation, keeps prices down, and typically tends to ensure a quality product. Don't get me wrong, I think Crossover is fantastic software, but with Cedega pretty much being dead where is the choice in commercial Wine software? Lesser known than the two previously mentioned is Bordeaux.

Pandora Radio on the N900 - pyPianobar
You know it is 2010 when you can be riding your bike home from work while listening to music streaming from the internet.I've been using Pandora Radio for some two years now and I have had a Pandora One subscription for the last year. When I received my N900 one of the first things I attempted to do with it was to load up Pandora via the webrowser as the device has full flash support - much to my dismay I was greeted by a choppy experience and a user interface that was difficult to navigate on such a small touch screen.

Some WINE with your Starcraft 2?
It finally happened. I have a Starcraft2 closed beta key! What feels like decades ago now I had applied for a Starcraft2 beta key on Battle.net and had all but given up hope after many months of waiting when a friend was kind enough to give me one of his invite passes. I entered the key into my account and was thoroughly excited when I saw the beta appear in my downloads.

HOWTO: Install e17 from SVN/source on Ubuntu
E17 is a lightweight window manager/bundle of libraries for Unix based operating systems. E17 is designed to be both elegant and fast - two goals it succeeds at very well. The only problem is that installing E17 on Ubuntu (and it's derivatives) is not a very straight forward process if you have never done it before, the following are the steps I have taken to get the E17 environment up and running on Ubuntu 9.10 (however it should work for all Ubuntu based systems).
