Interesting article, but I disagree that White was a mediocre employee. He was a master in a branch of applied physics and chemistry that has few masters. But he was not so adept at the affairs of the heart and cutthroat interoffice politic...s, as he needed to be in his high-tech career. Having been bested in that arena through personal betrayal, he slinked away and "settled" for a wife who was a former waitress (no slight intended to the character or the actress), a job that (in his eyes) was little better than babysitter, and a suburban lifestyle in the shadow of friends and neighbors including his bombastic LEO brother-in-law. He always thought he had the right stuff inside, and had been cheated out of the commanding position in his field and in his life, which his "right stuff" deserved. His cancer-motivated transformation into Heisenberg, and especially the recent victory over Fring, confirmed that he had what it would have taken to succeed in his "first life." It's just too bad that he didn't arrive at this realization, prior to his descent into criminal hell. I think Walt White is lost, and what will make his damnation worse is not just the knowledge that he could have done things the right way, if he had only gotten into gear earlier, before his cancer, but also the candid admission to himself that breaking bad was perhaps the only way for him to have broken out of his shell, and that he actually prefers the life of Heisenberg to the hypothetical life of a "winning" Walt White.See More
      • Jack Vornberg I wonder if Ted's days are numbered because Walter is clearly upset that he is out $622,000 because of Ted, not to mention that Skyler cheated on Walter with Ted.
