Summer Teen Artist Workshops

EMP's Teen Artist Workshops are taught by professional teaching artists. Following a week of collaborative learning and hard work, workshops culminate with a live showcase (open to family and friends), and/or original work to take home.

Available to teens entering grades 8-12 this fall.

Songwriting and Performance - June 25-29
Passionate about music and writing? Teens write and perform their own songs in a supportive, creative environment while they explore different styles of songwriting, and gain performance skills and language tools to write songs like their favorite musicians. Be prepared to do some singing!

Rock Band - July 9-13
Spend summer break as part of a killer rock band! Teens will rehearse cover songs, work with peers to create original works, and learn what it takes to be part of a successful band. Instructors will help expand musical repertoire, strengthen instrumental skills, and encourage the playing of new instruments. The workshop concludes with a live rock concert in JBL Theater. At least six months experience with an instrument recommended for this workshop.

Guitar 101 - July 9-13
Always wanted to learn how to rock the guitar? Focusing on basic techniques and chord fingerings, EMP's Guitar 101 course prepares you to make beautiful music.

DJing and Beatmaking - July 16-27 (2 weeks!)
Locally loved DJ WD4D will teach the art and culture of DJing and live beatmaking, and help teens create original mixes and songs.

Science Fiction and Fantasy Writing - July 16-20
What makes a good science fiction or fantasy story? Author Tim O'Brien will lead a week-long sci-fi/fantasy writing class that'll reveal the secret story elements that keep readers coming back for more.

Advanced Rock Band - July 23-Aug 3 (2 weeks!)
Strengthen your playing technique, songwriting and performance skills while developing strategies for working successfully within a band. The workshop concludes with a live rock concert in JBL Theater. This class will also include a one day RECORDING SESSION! All rock instrumentalists and vocalists are welcome to sign up. At least one year experience with an instrument recommended for this workshop.

Blues Guitar - August 6-10
Every guitar legend from Jimmy Page to Jack White has spent countless hours studying the blues. Students will spend a week doing just that while learning a variety of rhythm techniques, turnarounds, and chord shapes. Strengthen your lead playing by learning scales, slides, bends, pull offs, and hammer ons. By studying the arrangements of blues masters like B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix and others, students will learn the real foundation for modern-day rock 'n' roll.

Film Acting - Aug 6-10
Director/producer/actor Ali el-Gasseir will help teens hone their acting and script-writing skills.
