USDA Cancels Meatless Monday
What if a group of federal employees tried to take an action that would improve their health, and at the same time, better the health of the planet? What if this action was as simple as not eating meat one day a week? This scenario was not a "what if," but actually occurred in July 2012.
What the employees did not expect was the backlash from powerful business interests and their meat-loving toadies in the US government when they advocated implementing Meatless Monday in the USDA employee cafeteria.

Co-recipients of the 24 Carrot Award
Since its initial release in the spring of 2011 Forks Over Knives has brought the message that a whole-foods, plant-based lifestyle has so many health benefits, especially helping to reverse chronic diseases. The film has been a game changer in the health of so many who have viewed it and heeded its advice.
30% of Meat Eaters Won't Date Vegetarians
Add one more dating quirk to the list--bad personal hygiene, weird hair, odd habits--when it comes to whittling down the list of available prospects. A joint survey conducted by the Today show and Match.com found that out of 4,000 respondents, nearly 30% of meat eaters said that they would not date a vegetarian. Conversely, only 4% of vegetarians said they would not date those that enjoyed their steaks.
Reasons varied widely. Some meat eaters found it harder to enjoy a meal with their loved one, either for fear of being judged or being able to share in a common interest-- like carnivorism--fully.

Design a Meat Warning Label Let's face it. What this country needs is a warning label placed on each package of meat--something like the one on all packages of cigarettes, but maybe more colorful. All of us have come to realize that Meat is Dangerous and even KILLS.
These are typical of some of the recent news headlines that convey that message:
30-Day Challengers Shed Inches and Pounds One-by-one the students took the stage and shared their struggle with lifelong health and weight battles. Every student's experience resulted in a positive outcome and dramatic improvements in health. The students boasted not only of weight loss, but also of inches lost, lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and triglycerides. They experienced a boost in mental clarity and vitality and expressed a happier outlook and improved self-esteem.
The celebration was a festival of inspiration and a testament that adopting a healthy vegan diet can turn health challenges into surprising health improvements.
Bake It. Eat It. Love It, and It's Gluten-Free
Cookbook author and food writer Laurie Sadowski grew up thinking her constant digestive discomforts and lack of energy were normal. They weren't. After many challenging years she was diagnosed with celiac disease. With determination she overcame health struggles, devised methods to conquer her malady, and turned to the kitchen to create The Allergy-Free Cook Bakes Bread, a cookbook of unique recipes to help others avoid similar health problems.

Think About Using a Fork Instead of a Knife
When documentary devotees look back at films released in the last two decades of the 20th Century and the first decades of the 21st, they might overlook one of the most significant features to hit the screens in many years. Forks Over Knives does not report on scandals, political controversy, or ethnic wars. Instead it spotlights the public health crisis that affects everyone in the United States.
The film does not feature any national celebrities or Hollywood stars, but instead presents two unlikely grass-roots heroes who have been lionized in recent documentaries devoted to national health concerns. Its unlikely stars are two men in their late seventies who have amassed a legion of followers tuned in to their health message.

Vegetarian Wins Olympic Silver Medal in 87-Mile Cycling Race
Lizzie Armitstead was just 10 years old when she told her parents she wanted to become a vegetarian. Yesterday, she won Great Britain's first medal of the Olympic Games, taking silver in the gruelling 87-mile road cycling race, no less.
"One of the most common misconceptions I've come across is that vegetarians are pallid, gentle creatures who would recoil in a tough sporting arena. Despite the fact I was breaking school records on the track, people still questioned my diet's ability to make me strong."

NASA Develops Vegan Menu for Mars Mission
Next time NASA sends astronauts to Mars in the 2030s they won't be eating freeze dried food or liquid meals. That's so last millenium. On their projected mission to Mars NASA astronauts will eat 100% vegan meals complete with fresh fruits and vegetables grown on the spaceship.
How is this possible? It's all thanks to the research being done by NASA's Advanced Food Technology (AFT) project. Since Mars has some gravity, the AFT researchers believe astronauts will be able to chop, cook vegetables and even grow their own plants using hydroponics.

Experience a Rarity--Vegan Mexican Food
Because Mexican restaurants catering to vegan palates are such a rarity in Los Angeles, Costa Alegre in Echo Park stands apart with its full, colorful menu page of delicious vegan-friendly "authentic, traditional" Mexican dishes.
My man-size, flour tortilla burrito was muy gordo (very plump), topped with an addictively delicious tomatillo sauce, and garnished with a twisted orange slice. The filling was a succulent medley of brown rice, black beans, fresh pico de gallo, green bell peppers, onions, spinach, and broccoli. Delicioso!
Have a Bladder Infection? Stop Eating Chicken
Superbugs in chickens could be an underlying cause of antibiotic-resistant bladder infections in 8 million women, according to a new ABC News report. Superbugs in chickens could be an underlying cause of antibiotic-resistant bladder infections in 8 million women, according to a new ABC News report. In the ABC News investigation, McGill University researchers said their research suggests drug-resistant E. coli in chickens may be transferred to humans and manifest as the hard-to-treat bladder infections.
Antibiotics are usually given to chickens to promote growth and prevent disease before they're slaughtered and sold in stores, ABC News reported.
