Washington's Prayer For His Country
Posted by Rebecca Teti in News on Wednesday, November 23, 2011
Each time I read George Washington’s first Thanksgiving Day proclamation something new strikes me.
This year what most draws my attention is his unquestioned assumption that there is no contradiction between faith and reason, and that good government will promote the practice of religion and virtue as well as the increase of science.
Here’s the entire text.
Whereas it is the duty of all nations... READ MORE
On Memorial Day

Enjoy your holiday today, everyone!
Here’s a post from a previous Memorial Day I’m partially reprising because the priest’s advice just sticks with me:
I wanted to share with you some advice a Navy chaplain serving at our parish once gave to kids at a school mass on the Friday before Memorial Day.
(I liked it so much I wrote it down.)
He asked the students to sit for a few moments before he gave... READ MORE

Here’s a reprise of a nice essay for the occasion of Veteran’s Day: What a Veteran Knows.
With thanks to all who served or are serving, and prayers for families with active duty members away from home.
May God bless you, and may you never feel your sacrifices are unnoticed or unappreciated!

I served jury duty yesterday.
I know we’re not supposed to—and in the spirit of friendliness I made my share of jokes—
but I actually like jury duty.
“Like” might be too strong a word. The trial process is fascinating, but it’s easy to sit on a jury for one day; I’m well aware my tune might change if I were suddenly yanked from my life for a three-week process.
Yesterday was a matter of sitting... READ MORE

Here’s an anecdote I love from Richard Weaver’s Ideas Have Consequences.
The story made the papers during the early part of World War II.
An illiterate Oklahoma farmer, immediately upon hearing of the Pearl Harbor attack:
...departed with his wife to the West Coast to work in the shipyards. His wife found employment as a waitress and supported the two. Unable to read, the new worker did not understand... READ MORE
Happy Washington's Birthday
Posted by Rebecca Teti in News on Monday, February 15, 2010
Some of you may remember from a post last year that there’s no such thing as President’s Day.
There is Washington’s birthday, however, and I hope you’ve had a happy one.
I was just writing a column about Washington and Catholics for my other gig and thought you’d enjoy this anecdote, especially as we approach Lent.
Washington was, of all the Founding Fathers, the “most likely to be interrupted at... READ MORE

Danielle pays fitting tribute to one of the greatest speeches in our history below.
I think you might additionally enjoy this talk Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI) gave at an historically black church’s prayer breakfast over the weekend.
It’s about King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.”
Eyewitnesses report there were cries of “Preach it!” from the audience.
Not too shabby for a staid “policy wonk!”... READ MORE
Hug Lady

Do you know about Elizabeth Laird, “the hug lady”?
Since some soldiers departing for the war zone don’t have the opportunity to hug their moms good-bye, she does it for them—and gives every departing soldier a copy of the 91st Psalm, too.
I thought you might enjoy this unique positive story from Ft. Hood.

Here’s a sweet video apt for the observance of Veteran’s Day today.
It’s about “Honor Flight,” a program which flies elderly or terminally ill veterans to see the war memorials in Washington, DC.
Thanks to all you who have served and are serving! We prayed for you today.
