Planning a Peaceful Reunion

What are the essential ingredients?

Greetings from the lobby of a budget hotel in Anaheim, California, where I am currently enjoying Day 1 of a ten day “family reunion” experience to celebrate my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. My Mom and Daddy, superheroes in my book, requested that in honor of this major accomplishment, we children gather together for a week here in Southern California. The whole gang will begin to assemble on... READ MORE

Catholic Women Rejoice

An amazing women's conference...

Wow. Really: Wow!

I’m just back from attending the first-ever “Catholic Women Rejoice” conference held this past Saturday in Tualatin, Oregon. For the rest of the week, I will be sharing a few of the adventures from this trip but today I simply have to start by saying how fantastic the conference was.

Catholic Women Rejoice was the brainchild of Heather Renshaw. Heather’s husband has hosted a men’s... READ MORE

A Room with a View

Sleeping in peace...

We arrived here in New York City yesterday on the next leg of our little journey to the East. Adam and I are now enjoying a few days with Eric, who is spending the summer here in the big city. This is a place that will fill up your senses. Everywhere you turn there is something to see, to hear, and yes, to smell!

Imagine the delight of this Catholic Mom when we checked into our tiny hotel room, opened... READ MORE

Mass in a Mall?

Where is the most unusual place you've ever been to Mass?

Yesterday, I had the distinct pleasure of attending Mass for the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ in a most unusual setting - a shopping mall!

Let me clarify… the Eucharist was actually celebrated at St. Francis Chapel, a very lovely urban Boston worship space which has operated in the heart of the Prudential Center shopping mall since 1969. Today, the serene chapel is under the... READ MORE

Surviving at Camp

What tips can you share?

Adam and I are all signed up for a wonderful experience this summer—a week of folk and traditional music camp in Northern California. Of course, my almost eighteen year old would vastly prefer to head to camp on his own, but this particular venue requires that all minors have a chaperone in tow. So while mom doesn’t play a lick of music, she’ll be registering and taking a week to listen to good tunes,... READ MORE

Wish You Were Here

Amy Welborn's new book is a must-read

Amy Welborn‘s new book, “Wish You Were Here” is about her husband’s sudden death at the age of 50 and her subsequent trip to Italy a few months later.

When Welborn’s husband drops dead on a treadmill at the gym, her life is upended. The book starts here, with the shocking news and from there we see how Welborn survives that initial shock and moves forward from there. In the midst of that she decides... READ MORE

Overcoming Emotional Jet Lag

Getting back to "normal"...

Today, I’m sending out a huge thanks to the world’s best editor, Mrs. Danielle Bean, for her patience with my inability to post last week as scheduled while I was tromping around Israel. Despite my plans, technology and time conspired against me and I wasn’t able to share as much of the trip “live” as I had hoped. For those who want to know more about my adventures, I will be posting an ongoing series of recap articles over at CatholicMom.com.... READ MORE

On Becoming a Pilgrim

The prayer adventure of a lifetime...

Hi friends, just a few quick words from the Holy Land where I am having the time of my life. Our internet connection here in Jerusalem is sketchy at best—to use my iPad I must do some gymnastics that are inconvenient at best… so I will keep this short and share the bulk of my stories over the next few weeks when I return home to the land of abundant and free wifi.

Although I have been able share so... READ MORE

Off to Israel

A journey to the Holy Land

On Wednesday of this week, I’ll be able to cross a lifelong dream off of my “some day” list as I depart on a nine-day trip to Israel. I’ll be in the company of nine other Catholic writers as part of a trip arranged by the Catholic Press Association in conjunction with the Israeli Ministry of Tourism.

Our nine-day adventure will take us to many of the highlights of Israel—mentally, as I write this... READ MORE

There and Back Again

which is quicker?

Have you ever noticed that the leg home from a trip always seems quicker? That’s been my experience. My husband and I were just discussing this on our way home from our recent epic cross-country vacation that involved planes, vans and a 3 a.m. arrival back home.

Coming home just didn’t seem to drag on like getting out there did. I wonder if part of it really is the anticipation of the good things... READ MORE
