Tell Us About Your Fortnight
Posted by Rebecca Teti in News on Tuesday, July 03, 2012
Tomorrow, Cardinal Wuerl will close the Fortnight for Freedom with Mass at DC’s Basilica of the Immaculate Conception at noon.
Archbishop Chaput will be the homilist.
If you’re there, perhaps we’ll see each other. (Or watch it on EWTN.)
Tonight we’re attending a talk on religious liberty, followed by a holy hour of prayer for the country.
Tell us about your Fortnight activities—especially tell us about parish or diocesan events and how they went, and your reflections on the experience of two weeks of intense prayer and educational activity.
(One of the coolest things I heard about was a parish entering a religious liberty float in their town’s Independence Day parade.)
Don’t just share with us. If you’re on twitter, share reflections using hashtags #Fortnight4Freedom and #SacredProperty.

The US Bishops have long had a version of the Catechism on their website, and I never used it.
It was difficult to search and navigate, so I’d just reach for my paper version instead. It was easy to flip to the (excellent) index and find the information I wanted, and I’d often enjoy browsing the topics at random as well.
But my paper copy of the Catechism is going to languish on the shelf now, because... READ MORE

Worried about the direction of the country and don’t know what to do about it?
How about a two week national “revival” movement of prayer and patriotism, to cover the country in grace and re-dedicate ourselves to the basic liberties enshrined in the Declaration and Bill of Rights?
Right, Left, Center or Undecided, any person of good will can take part with pride in the Fortnight for Freedom.

A dear friend of mine relates the story of a bad misjudgment she made as a first-year teacher.
While chaperoning a field trip to a local mall, she allowed two girls (6th or 7th graders?) to break away from her party and run upstairs “just for a second.”
I don’t recall the details but something bad almost happened (a strange man was involved).
Rightly the parents raised holy hell.
My friend still recalls... READ MORE
Fortnight for Freedom

Have you read our bishops’ letter on religious freedom Our First, Most Cherished, Liberty?
It’s a powerful defense not only of our Catholic faith, but of the Constitution.
The close of the document calls for a “Fortnight for Freedom” to be observed from June 21st (the vigil of the feast of Saints John Fisher and Thomas More) to Independence Day.
Our bishops suggest this fortnight be observed with... READ MORE

“What we bring is not an onerous burden – we bring a liberation. And people may not know they do want this good news from Jesus but it really is what they’re looking for.”
That’s a quote from Archbishop Allen Vigneron of Detroit, interviewed during a recent visit to the Vatican. I’m proud that he’s local to here. He’s a great man, and it’s a great interview, full of truth.

Remembering One Bishop, Welcoming Another

Today, I will pause my workday to attend 12:15 mass at our beautiful cathedral in remembrance of Bishop John T. Steinbock, who died one year ago today. During the past year, our diocese has mourned his loss, prayed for our new Bishop, and been ably and faithfully led by Msgr. Myron Cotta.
Last week, early Thursday morning, we received the happy news of the appointment of our new shepherd—- Bishop Armando X. Ochoa... READ MORE

No Easy Surrenders!

Last week’s post on the threat to the First Amendment right to free exercise of religion posed by Health and Human Services rules slated to take effect next summer garnered some attention on facebook and google+.
I posted to spread the word, and to point out some unintended consequences of the effort to force pro-lifers to assent to abortion, so was pleased in that regard.
But jeepers, the comments... READ MORE
Church News

The blogosphere is abuzz this afternoon with commentary and speculation about the appointment of a new Archbishop for Philadelphia. Because no official announcement has been made, I prefer to wait until we have news from the Vatican or the USCCB before engaging in a discussion about this appointment, which will truly be historic and important for the future of our Church in the US.
I’m pondering the... READ MORE
