Peter Gabriel joins Madonna, Paul McCartney in backing Pussy Riot

Peter Gabriel has joined the likes of Madonna and Paul McCartney in backing jailed Russian rock band Pussy Riot. The three female members of the band are due to be sentenced today on charges of hooliganism following a protest song aimed at president Vladimir Putin in a Moscow church earlier this year. Peter Gabriel has backed Russian rock band Pussy Riot (PA) However, the Sledgehammer singer has offered his support to the ‘brave’ band and said that he hopes their stand will help Russians in the future. Writing an opinion piece for The Times, Gabriel praised the band for being ‘willing to risk their freedom, along with all the accompanying threats to family’. He added that he hoped the stand would, one day, lead to ‘a better, freer and more open Russia’. ‘The Russians are a very smart, able and independent people who will, for sure, determine who governs them and how they do it,’ the former Genesis man wrote. ‘We outsiders (and musicians) are now being asked to help them to throw off the heavy blanket of silence, to let a little light into Russia’s darkest corners. ‘Turning away doesn’t seem like the right thing to do.’ Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, from the band, has said in a letter through her lawyer that she has ‘political spite’, adding that their ‘freedom is being taken away from the whole country’.
