With fall, Fox
trots again

Now tops in 18-49s, after season of stumbles

By Kevin Downey

It may be Fox's destiny to be the network that slumps to the point of derision, only to then stage such a rally that it soon becomes the envy of the other broadcast networks.
It's happened again. Having lost 9 percent of its adult 18-49 audience in the regular season, Fox managed to make up the loss, increasing its share over the summer to 12 percent.
Of course, ”American Idol: The Search for a Superstar”  deserves most of the credit, but it doesn't deserve all of it.
As we go into the fall, credit also goes to shows like NFL football and top-rated movies.
Fox ranked No. 1 last week in every major demographic and had five of the top 10 network shows among adults 18-49, for example, on the strength of “Idol,” football, and the movie “There’s Something About Mary.”
The final two episodes of “Idol” were the highest-rated programs of the week, perhaps not surprisingly since the show got off to a strong start early this summer and has built momentum virtually every week since.
Wednesday’s finale, in fact, was watched by 13.7 million adults 18-49, according to an MTV analysis of Nielsen data that compares ratings for broadcast and cable programs.
Fox was No. 1 for the week overall with an average 4.7 rating in the demographic and had its biggest lead ever over the other Big Four networks.
CBS had a 3 rating. NBC had a 2.7 and slumped into third place after dominating most of the off-season. ABC had a 2.3, UPN had a 1.2 and the WB had a 1.1.
Although its rating was only about half of “Idol’s” Wednesday episode, overtime coverage of NFL football on Fox ranked No. 3 in primetime and contributed to the network’s weekly win. The game itself had a higher rating, but aired during the day on Sunday.
“There’s Something About Mary” tied at No. 10 among network primetime programs with a 4.4 rating and edged past a slew of other Fox shows that were among the highest-rated, including “That 70s Show” and “King of the Hill.”
While Fox overshadowed its competitors, the other networks didn’t sit idly by.
CBS, for example, aggressively aired four episodes of its top-rated “CSI.”
Like Fox, CBS had five shows among the networks’ top 10, including three of those “CSI” episodes, one episode of its short-run “Big Brother 3,” and “Everybody Loves Raymond,” which tied NBC’s “Friends” as the week’s highest-rated comedy in the 18-49 demographic.
Although NBC had a poor showing relative to its usual standing at No. 1, the network managed to have a handful of highly rated programs.
Most of NBC’s shows ranked below the top 10, but “Friends,” “Law & Order” and “Will & Grace” were all among the week’s highest-rated programs.
ABC ranked No. 4 and held onto the adult 18-49 rating it had a week earlier.
The network’s average rating will improve starting next week when the first episode of this season’s “Monday Night Football” is factored into the network rankings.
As of last week, however, its best showing was for the movie “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” which had a 3.7 rating in the demo. ABC’s highest rated regular series was “My Wife & Kids.” The show had a 3 rating.
Meanwhile, Fox’s No. 1 ranking among households was its first ever for a week without a major sporting event, like the Super Bowl.
Few advertisers specifically target households, but a victory in the demographic at least gives a network something to crow about.
Fox had a 6.2 rating and 11 share and slightly edged past CBS, the usual No. 1 among households, which had a 6.1/11.
   NBC had a 5.2/9, ABC had a 4.4/8, UPN had 2.1/3 and the WB had a 1.7/3.
