Preview: The Cat that Got the Milk Devs' Button Affair

August 25, 2012 12:00 PM | John Polson

TheButtonAffair_Poster.jpgOllie Clark, Helana Santos, Chris Randle, and Jon Mann's freeware title The Cat that Got the Milk set the Internet on fire in January, and the team looks to raise and singe a few more eyebrows with its three-chapter auto-runner The Button Affair for free next month.

While The Cat that Got the Milk dazzled with abstract art, The Button Affair taps into the fantastical 1950s-60s Jet-Set era, with images like this serving as inspiration. Developer Oliver Clarke says, "I have a copy on the wall next to me...in our times of recession, I think it says there are better times ahead full of excitement, glamour, drama, and life."

Shoot 1UP Out Now For Windows Phone 7

August 24, 2012 11:00 PM | Danny Cowan

Mommy's Best Games' Xbox Live Indie Games shoot-'em-up Shoot 1UP has been released for Windows Phone 7. The live-action trailer above is basically a must-watch.

In Shoot 1UP, players control an entire squadron of ships at once, rather than a single craft. The formation can be narrowed to make it easier to dodge enemy bullets, or widened for a powerful beam attack. The Windows Phone 7 version includes a set of unlockable achievements, along with a new Score Tilt gameplay mode.

Shoot 1UP is priced at $2.99.

Freeware Game Pick: Telepaint (Mark Foster)

August 24, 2012 8:00 PM | John Polson

Mark Foster of Clawhammer Games emailed IndieGames about his new Windows action puzzler Telepaint, where players use sets of portals to navigate the character to its goal. Since the paint character automatically moves, players must time when to activate the portal pairs to use the appropriate trajectory.

IndieGames previewed the dev's Limbo- and Fez-inspired Chroma in June. Telepaint is based off Chroma's source code, so it serves as a glimpse of what the larger Chroma will look like.

Telepaint's cleverness and Chroma's promise suggest Mark Foster is a dev worth following. That said, I'd offer two tweaks for Telepaint: a speed-up button for those longer, slow auto-walks and a timer or "moves counter" to push players to learn optimum paths. Those interested can download Mark Foster/Clawhammer Games' Telepaint for Windows now.

Demo: Stained (RealAxis Software)

August 24, 2012 6:00 PM | Cassandra Khaw

Your parents may have told you never to run with scissors but they said nothing about scythes. Stained is a 'physics-based side-scrolling, platforming and combat action game' set within the confines of a mysterious castle. There, you'll find an assortment of breakable objects and glasses pieces that may come together to form a variety of enemies. RealAxis Software's Stained is something that we took a look at before. However, if you've been hankering for a hands-on, you're in luck. The developers recently put together a demo for those interested in taking the game for a test drive.

You can find out more about the game (and download the demo) at the official website.

Trailer: ArcheBlade (Codebrush Games)

August 24, 2012 4:00 PM | Cassandra Khaw

Upcoming third-person action fighting game ArcheBlade could probably use some help in the localization department but that doesn't stop it from looking like a frenetic amount of possible fun. Created by a team of twelve, Archeblade has been in production for almost four years now and will be available on Steam sometime next year in March. The game will apparently feature a variety of game modes, have a strong storyline based on a novel with the same name and a lot of multiplayer action. Yeah, this is definitely no Dear Esther.

However, if you're curious as to what Archeblade has to offer, there's more information on the official website.

[English Version Update] Freeware Game Pick: Hanten Puzzle (Rei Nejimaki)

August 24, 2012 3:30 PM | John Polson

hanten english.jpgHanten Puzzle (Inverse Puzzle) is a refreshingly brilliant, hard head-scratcher for Windows developed for the 4th Wolf RPG Editor Contest. Players have a set number of times they can invert blocks or even themselves in a given column to arrive at the red cube in 50 levels.

[Edit: The developer has kindly released an English-friendly version after reading the article.]

The character moves with the directional arrows, X inverts, R restarts, and Z places and removes the flashy blue marks which indicate where each column inverts. The flashing text in the upper left denotes how many inversions (not marks) remain. Players can place one mark per column, in as many rows as they want, as long as the player isn't standing on a mark when they choose to invert. The game later introduces darkened blocks, upon which players cannot place marks.

Those who want a rigorous challenge must try out Hanten Puzzle.

Demo And Release: Krog (Conjured Graphics & Blackgard)

August 24, 2012 12:00 PM | Danny Cowan

Conjured Graphics (Ryan Miller) and Blackgard (Tom Cameron) have teamed up to produce Krog, a dungeon-crawling RPG for Windows and Mac. An iOS version is also available.

In Krog, players control a hungry whale-dog-boar-thing that has the ability to change colors. The story mode includes dozens of quests, and many more randomized levels are available in the post-game "Roam" mode. Krog will be supported with monthly content updates through the rest of the year.

The PC version of Krog is priced at $10. A browser-based demo version can be played here.

Demo: Plethora 2012 Disclosure (Ian Martin)

August 24, 2012 10:00 AM | Danny Cowan

Ian Martin of retrolutionary.com has released a demo version of his upcoming horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up Plethora 2012 Disclosure.

Martin hopes to shake things up in the genre with some interesting gameplay tweaks. In addition to a front-firing shot, your ship is also equipped with an alternate mode of fire controlled via mouse input. The game also boasts a unique "mastery" system that allows you to skip levels that have already been fully mastered, and enemy positions in each level are randomized, forcing you to rely on reflexes rather than memorization.

Plethora 2012 will feature 28 levels and 13 weapon types when it launches for Windows in October.

Browser Game Pick: Think Tank (Pjorg, Manly-Chicken)

August 24, 2012 5:00 AM | Konstantinos Dimopoulos / Gnome

think tank.pngThere are few things that can be more infuriating than Sokoban and those generally involve Sokoban with added arcade and puzzle mechanics. You know, a bit like Think Tank, which, lovely, good-looking, well written and addictive as it might be, still is a particularly infuriating game. No, really, it even jokes about rage quits.
