Fuelling the Games

We’re fuelling the official Games fleet and showing the potential of new and more sustainable mobility options
BP is the Official Oil and Gas Partner for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. During the Games we’ll be providing fuels and engine oils for over 5,000 official vehicles. We’ll also be providing bottled gas (LPG) for catering facilities throughout the Olympic and Paralympic venues.

We’ll be using our role as a London 2012 partner to showcase a powerful mix of existing and emerging technologies and practices for fuels and mobility. These will represent the most efficient and progressive solutions for today and the next 10 to 15 years.
The Games fleet will be fuelled with BP Ultimate – fuels that demonstrate outstanding improvements in engine cleanliness and protection, driving better efficiency and emissions. They will also be supplied with Castrol’s leading range of lubricants, including the latest advanced diesel engine lubricant, Edge, which is protecting engines, enhancing fuel and emissions efficiency and driving down the costs of fleet operation.

A sustainable legacy for London 2012

As a Sustainability Partner for London 2012, BP is working with the Games organizers and other London 2012 partners to find ways of creating a sustainable legacy for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. “London 2012: Fuelling the Future” is BP’s programme for inspiring change.

So, for example, BP will provide responsible transport fuelling options such as advanced biofuel blends, prior to their commercial launch. BP will demonstrate the huge potential of biofuel blends by making them available in limited quantities at BP’s retail site on the Hammersmith flyover in west London, at a scale to fuel 40 vehicles in the official Games fleet. At the flyover site, we will promote biofuels: from a new technology that unlocks the potential of energy grasses; a new technology that converts sugars into diesel and a new generation of advanced fuel molecule for blending with petrol.
We’ll also ‘showcase’ in the Olympic Park – and in our wider London 2012 partnership programme - how and why ‘Fuelling the Future’ is rooted in reality by demonstrating the many practical, progressive steps that BP and our partners are taking to transform the efficiency of mobility – and how individuals can play their part.

As the official Carbon Offsetting Partner for London 2012, we’ll be offsetting the vehicles’ carbon emissions using BP Target Neutral, a not-for-profit programme aimed at encouraging individuals to reduce, replace or neutralise (offset) their carbon emissions from travel. BP will also create an offset offer for all ticketed spectators helping them to reduce and offset their emissions from travelling to the Games. We’ll do the same for the carbon emitted by our athlete ambassadors as they travel for training and competitions and prepare for the Games.

Not only will it make the Games more sustainable, it’s a chance to inspire the millions of people who will watch the Games to think about the mobility choices they make every day.
