What Would Your Husband Pin?

...or would he?

You all know how much I love the new social networking “scrapbook” Pinterest. Well yesterday, I ran across this interesting article over at CNN describing the recent trend in creation of “man-oriented” Pinterest imitation sites. The article details Pinterest’s meteoric rise in popularity and offers alternatives men might prefer using. Here’s a quote from one of the alternate site’s founders:

Brandon... READ MORE

Pre-Teens on Facebook?

What do you think?

Today over at Mashable, there is an interesting article and poll on the topic of whether or not pre-teens should be permitted membership access to Facebook. At the time I’m writing this, the “NO WAY!” sanity vote is leading in the poll with 66% percent of respondents indicating that they think granting access on the popular social networking site is a bad idea.

The article is a response to a recent... READ MORE

Quitting Facebook? Not Me.

Are you into social networking?

Facebook buzz has reached a fever pitch this week as everyone’s favorite (or most detested) social network launches its initial public offering tomorrow. Some have questioned the skyrocketing value of Facebook, and plenty of others have questioned whether it has any merit at all and is not simply a collossal time dump. This article at CNN today discusses why one tech columnist won’t be ditching Facebook... READ MORE

Are you pinning?

Have you checked out Pinterest?

If you’re online much, you’ve probably heard about Pinterest, one of the hottest new social networking properties around these days. Launched in beta in March of 2010, the site is now welcoming over 11 million visits per week and seems to be all the rage among many of my geek friends—especially those of the female persuasion.

What is Pinterest all about? Here’s an overview from the site’s “About”... READ MORE

Google+ or Minus?

Does another social networking tool equal less family time?

How many of our Faith & Family friends have already jumped on board the newest social networking fad, Google+? I’ve seen a few of you there, and it’s likely that you’re among my “mom” or “Catholic geek” circles if we’ve connected at Google’s newest playground.

I jumped in with both feet in late June and have been dabbling with the tool a bit each day since then. For those who haven’t yet used Google+... READ MORE

This week on the Faith & Family Live Cast (click here to listen or click on the player above), Danielle, Elizabeth and I take on two interesting topics. In our first segment, we look at supervising our teenagers’ (and our own!) usage of social media platforms such as Facebook. For some great guidelines and thoughts on these topics, check out two recent posts here and here. What are some of your family’s... READ MORE

Promote Catholic Media & Win An IPad 2

Help us spread the good news!

Have you heard the big news? Tomorrow, March 15, is “Catholic Media Promotion Day”.  This grassroots effort is designed to help spread the word about all of the great work being done in Catholic Media. To build buzz, a Facebook page has been created at Facebook.com/PromoteCatholicism and everyone who “likes” that page will be entered to win an iPad2.  But more importantly, you’ll be helping to spread... Catholic Media Promotion Day

Mark your calendar for March 15!

This morning, I was happily driving home from taking Adam to school while listening to my friends Greg and Jennifer Willits chat on their radio show The Catholics Next Door.  I love their banter, their friendship, and their energy for the faith.  So when I heard Greg “tease” a new idea he was planning just as I was pulling into the garage, I simply couldn’t walk away and quit listening.  I only have... Facebook: A Marriage Killer?

What do you think?

It feels like I’ve been reading and hearing it everywhere lately: Facebook is bad for marriages.

The statistic I often see is that Facebook is cited as a cause of divorce in 20% of cases.*

I told this to my husband and he raised an eyebrow at me. “Like… how? Someone got addicted to Farmville and neglected their spouse?”

If only it were that simple! Facebook, as it presents chances to reconnect with... READ MORE

Facebook, Friends and Faith

What helps? What hurts?

This weekend, I have the pleasure of speaking at a conference on the topic “Finding Friendship in the Facebook Generation”.  My friends here know I’m very passionate about the use of social media in building community, supporting relationships and especially in sharing the Good News of Christ’s gospel message.  But as I prepare to revisit this topic on Saturday with a new group of friends, I would...
