Indispensable Baby Stuff

What can't you do without?

I recently spent several precious days in the company of my first-ever niece, little miss Elsa Beatrice. Of course, I do believe she is the most beautiful eight month old I’ve ever seen—but then again, I’m a bit biased. Our boy-filled family has been waiting for a girl for almost 21 years! My youngest brother Michael and his lovely wife Meg finally delivered the golden child. She’s already Nana’s... READ MORE

Baby View

a happy tech-y solution

We live in a small ranch house, so from our firstborn’s babyhood we’ve had a simple audio baby monitor. The bedrooms are about ten steps away from the living room anyway, so a video monitor seemed unnecessary. We did fine without one.

Fast forward five years. We’ve now got 15-month-old twins. They sleep on mattresses on the floor in our bedroom (which we have fenced in with walls and bed rails) so... READ MORE

Ancient Parenting

as old as time

My husband and I just returned from ten days in Italy, and while we were visiting the Vatican Museum I saw this statue. Don’t you love it?

I wonder if there were any debates back then about nursing in public and covering up? I’m thinking not. At one church there was a painting with a priest saying mass and a woman seated in front of him nursing her baby. Beautiful!

Caring for our babies is something... READ MORE

Twins Are One!

A celebration for them and some reflection for me

My husband had a countdown on his phone for months. Every so often he gave me an update. It was a big deal when we hit the halfway point, and three-quarters, and less than two months left. Last week, with mere days to go, I didn’t need updates. I could count for myself.

Linus Michael and Ambrose John were born just after midnight on May 12th last year. Last Saturday, they were one year old. ONE WHOLE... READ MORE

Long Life Love

a long branch of a family tree!

This weekend I had the joy of being with both my mother and my paternal grandmother (as we call her, “Nana”) on Mother’s Day. I thought it was pretty neat that - with my children present - we had four generations in the room.

But imagine if we had two more than that!

From Charlottesville, Virginia, comes this sweet story: a photographer got the chance to capture six generations of women from a single... READ MORE

Baby Needs His Zs

a bit of funny for your evening

I thought Ambrose needed a nap, but I couldn’t get him to sleep. I have a cold, so I left him in the care of my (oh so kind and generous) sister and went to take a nap of my own.

He WAS tired, it turned out. Look at this hilarious footage she got of him. I think at one point, near the end, you can actually hear him snore.

marriage! and babies!

My husband and I will have our tenth wedding anniversary this year, and I feel like we’ve been married “forever” - but we’ve got nothing on this couple!

Eunice and Lloyd Ford were married April 9, 1929, a full EIGHTY-THREE years ago. Wow.

And as a bonus, here are eleven babies around the world. So cute!

Family Restaurant

do you eat out with your kids?

Before our daughter was born, we used to eat in restaurants all the time. And - although it seems crazy to me now - after she was born, we kept it up at almost the same rate.

As soon as Milla (who’d been a colicky newborn) could make it through a meal without scream-blasting the eardrums of those around us, we started taking her out to eat at family-friendly places. It got easier as she aged, and... READ MORE

Watch This Happy Minute

a video to brighten your day

This is the sweetest thing I’ve seen in a while. Check out how excited these grandparents-to-be are when they hear the big news.

(Yeah, I teared up a little. How could I help it?)

Spurt Moments

What have yours been?

“I’m nervous,” I confessed to my husband last night. He raised an amused eyebrow at me.

I knew it was silly, but I couldn’t help it. I felt like I was the one who was going to be tested.

This afternoon (as I write this, actually) Camilla is talking to the teacher whose class we hope she’ll be in next year, answering questions about reading and math and proving that she’s ready for first grade.

I’m... READ MORE
