Planning a Peaceful Reunion

What are the essential ingredients?

Greetings from the lobby of a budget hotel in Anaheim, California, where I am currently enjoying Day 1 of a ten day “family reunion” experience to celebrate my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. My Mom and Daddy, superheroes in my book, requested that in honor of this major accomplishment, we children gather together for a week here in Southern California. The whole gang will begin to assemble on... READ MORE

Relaxation Bliss

rediscovering life away from life

As their joint present to us for our twins’ first birthday, my parents and two youngest sisters gave my husband and me the gift of time: a night away. They would watch all our children, and we could go stay at a hotel and have a blessed half-weekend to ourselves.

We planned it for July, nine weeks after they told us about it, and Bryan and I counted down to days. Finally it came. As I told him while... READ MORE

There and Back Again

which is quicker?

Have you ever noticed that the leg home from a trip always seems quicker? That’s been my experience. My husband and I were just discussing this on our way home from our recent epic cross-country vacation that involved planes, vans and a 3 a.m. arrival back home.

Coming home just didn’t seem to drag on like getting out there did. I wonder if part of it really is the anticipation of the good things... READ MORE

Must See Sites

How many have you seen?

I came across an interesting article yesterday, “15 places kids should see by age 15.”

Looking over the list, our family is doing pretty good. We’ve seen nearly half of the places listed, and a few more of the sights are in our immediate future (Grand Canyon, here we come!).

One place on the list, I must admit, I find a tad debatable. Among the fifteen places the article mentions, wedged between Williamsburg... READ MORE

How I Spent My Christmas Vacation

10 Things I Learned on Sanibel Island
Pineapple Christmas

Do you know what? I don’t like keeping secrets from you guys.

When we decided to take a family trip to south Florida for Christmas break, I chose not to mention it online for security reasons. I still think that was a good idea, but I am a blogger, a Facebooker, and Tweeter. It was difficult to not share our road trip and various family adventures as they happened.

Driving over 3,000 miles there and... READ MORE

Leave the Suitcase in the Closet

How do you feel about the "staycation"?

Today is Monday, but it feels like Saturday.

To be exact, it feels like Saturday after a really long week.

My husband was out of town from dawn on the Friday before last until late this past Saturday night. He was working long hours, mostly out of cell-phone range.

Nine days of that (on top of two week-long trips he took in August) gave me a new respect for military wives.

Here’s the good part:... READ MORE

Reptile, Sand and Sea

I can’t resist sharing this photo from our family trip to the ocean last week.

Other kids swam, collected shells, and hunted crabs and baby lobsters. But on this particular day, 14-year-old Eamon was single-minded. He was creating a sea turtle.

Life lately has felt a bit overwhelming, with various home projects, work projects, and the rush to prepare for a new school year. But when I look at this photo, I am reminded to give thanks to God for simple pleasures, for days at the beach, for the sound of the waves, for 14-year-old boys, and the simplicity of sand.

Re-Entry

post-vacation blues

We arrived home last night after being gone for over a week. Part of the time was spent at the Catholic New Media Celebration and the rest was our family seeing the sights of Washington, D.C. and then Boston.

We had a wonderful time.

Today we are back to reality—there are meals to cook and beds to make, and no hotel staff coming in to change sheets and vacuum the floors. I’m always surprised at how... READ MORE

School of Nursing

Here, there, everywhere

This week is World Wide Nursing Week and in honor of that I have been nursing the baby all over kingdom come.

I did not set out to make any kind of statement, but we are on vacation with a four-month-old and so I am feeding her when she’s hungry, wherever that happens to be. So far I’ve nursed Isabel: at a rest stop in the Blue Ridge Parkway; on the DC Metro; at the Smithsonian (twice); at a Wendy’s... READ MORE

Hanging Summer Hopes & Dreams

an easy way to communicate and motivate this summer

What are your family’s hopes and dreams for together time this summer?

Lisa’s recent post about scheduling summer got me thinking about the kinds of activities I hope to fill our summer days with this year.

Then this post at Teach Mama really inspired me. Shouldn’t every family member—even the smallest ones—have a say in our how your family spends its time this summer?

It’s a good idea to have personal... READ MORE
