Three, Two… Seven?

Kids' counting, mixed-up

My daily life—and, I suspect, the lives of many other families with toddlers—involves a lot of counting. Three songs before bedtime; twelve grapes for a snack; five seconds to calm down from throwing a fit.
Blaise is too young to “get” numbers, but Camilla likes them. The framework of numbers for treats and discipline works well for her because she can understand it.

She also enjoys counting for... READ MORE

Wild Innocent Joy

Backyard by Felicita

Here’s a sweet gift of joy a reader emailed me this week.

Six-year-old Felicita wrote and performed this catchy song all by herself. Her four siblings sing and dance along with her, her uncle shot the video on his iPhone, and her dad produced the recording.

The reader who emailed wrote, ” It showcases, I think, the richness and lightness and purity of Joy - singing a little melody and dancing with her sisters, I feel like little Felicity is letting us witness what Chesterton calls ‘the gigantic secret of the Christian.’”

I have to agree. Watch for yourself and see how infectious and attractive genuine joy can be.

Tell Us Your Good News

Need some good news? I do, so here’s some:

I’m pleased to report that Prof. Kenneth Howell—that teacher fired from the U. of Illinois for explaining Catholic teaching in a class on Catholicism—will be offered his job back.

Not happy news, exactly, but better-than-we’d hoped: the Gulf oil spill will have less environmental impact than expected.

I meant to post this earlier in the summer but never... READ MORE

Pretty… Boys?

When dress-up goes weird

A college friend of mine came from a family of six girls followed by two boys.

She told me a story of a time her father came home and his son tripped into the room to meet him. He’d been playing dress-up with his sisters, and he was decked out in a skirt, heels, and jewelry: the whole dress-up package.

Apparently this kind of dress-up was a common occurrence in their home (with six girls, of course... READ MORE

The Pope's (other) great hat

Did you see this great picture of the Holy Father sporting a baseball cap while taking a walk around his gardens?

I love that it matches his white cassock, and it’s so practical! I know I always like to wear sunglasses or a hat when I’m outdoors in the sun - it’s much easier on the eyes that way.

Here has a couple more photos of the Pope in his cap, if you want to see them.

No One Beat Me Up

Sharing childhood fun
My siblings and me a decade ago

“If I had to use two words to describe my childhood,” my sister said the other day, “they would be: pink belly.”

I was unloading the dishwasher and almost dropped a handful of forks. What?!? Pink belly? What was she talking about?

Apparently, “pink belly” is a game wherein the perpetrators hold down the victim and smack him on the belly until it turns pink.

I am the oldest of six children, and Tirienne... READ MORE

A Happy Bargain

My daughter's great (and cheap) new toy

My husband called this afternoon and told me that he was going to come home from work early, trade his car for my bigger one, and go out and pick up a surprise.

“A surprise?” I asked, thinking quickly about what large items could be exciting for me.

But the surprise wasn’t for me, he told me. It was for Camilla.

Ah! That explained his gleeful tone - my husband loves to delight his little girl.

Camilla... READ MORE

Game Over

Are you sad?

I’m just curious if anyone out there is sad the World Cup has come and gone? Do you miss the sound of vuvuzelas buzzing through your home?

Our family had a lot of fun watching a lot of games, but I suppose I’m glad it’s over. We had another family over to watch the final game yesterday and that was a nice way to round out a very fun first-half-of-summer experience. The World Cup comes but once every four years and I bet when I look back, years from now, I will have fond memories of watching these games with my husband and crew.

News Light

Read the news and go to bed smiling

Especially since becoming a mother, I have trouble reading the news. It seems like there are so many gruesome or depressing stories, and it’s easy to get bogged down.

Recently after a quick scan of the online news, I was looking for a cheery story, anything that would make me feel a little better about the state of the world.

I Googled “happy news.” And look what I found!

Someone runs an entire website... READ MORE
