The Importance of Holy Water
Posted by Rachel Balducci in Family on Wednesday, July 18, 2012
When we were in Rome last month, we came across this powerful sculpture in the church of St. Paul Outside the Walls. It’s actually a holy water font with a small child happily going along his way while a clearly agitated and pained demon (maybe it’s Satan himself) writhes in agony right next to the child. The power of the holy water is so tremendous it keeps the child safe, just like that.
We marveled... READ MORE
Relaxation Bliss

As their joint present to us for our twins’ first birthday, my parents and two youngest sisters gave my husband and me the gift of time: a night away. They would watch all our children, and we could go stay at a hotel and have a blessed half-weekend to ourselves.
We planned it for July, nine weeks after they told us about it, and Bryan and I counted down to days. Finally it came. As I told him while... READ MORE
Becoming Multilingual?

I didn’t get my husband a card or a gift for Father’s Day. If I’d planned ahead, I would have gotten one, but I didn’t.
The funny thing is that he says it was a great day anyway. I think he used the word “wonderful” to describe it. I’m glad. But it doesn’t necessarily make sense to me.
Bryan and I have been married almost a decade, and I imagine it’ll take several more decades for us to get the hang... READ MORE
What Moms Really Want
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Family on Monday, May 07, 2012
This morning, I had what has become a semi-regular May occurrence in my life: an interview about “what moms really want for Mother’s day”.
In preparing to celebrate this weekend with my Mother-in-law here locally, I’m reminded now more than ever that the gift of “presence” is so precious, especially as our own moms get older. But my research for today’s interview also reminded me that “absence” can... READ MORE
Confirmation Gifts

Have you started celebrating Confirmation in your parish? We have ours next week!
I’m thinking about nice gifts to give—I noticed in our latest edition of Faith and Family magazine an idea to give a framed print or icon of the confirmandi’s patron saint. Other good ideas are a nice book on the Holy Spirit, or a special rosary.
I’d love to hear suggestions for confirmation gifts, especially if you’ve... READ MORE
The Perfect Girl Gift
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Just me on Monday, March 26, 2012
With Confirmations, First Communions and Graduations approaching, it’s the season for giving. Last week, I received a query from one of our readers who asked,
“I have a daughter who will be graduating from college this year and would like to give her a special and meaningful gift that she can use throughout her life that will help her to always strive to be the woman God is calling her to be. Do... READ MORE
Find Yourself through Service

“Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant;
whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.
Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve
and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
We all have a desire to be great, to stand out for some accomplishment. Perhaps we hope to be a great doctor, a great businesswoman, a great musician.... READ MORE
The Gift Dilemma

Our kids have too many toys.
If I were writing this on Twitter, I’d wryly label it #firstworldproblems, but the good fortune of our situation does not change the spreading-all-over-the-house, making-Mama-crazy aspect of it. There are too many toys.
Recent ruthless culling has returned our playroom to a manageable state, with a few age-inappropriate things stored and many many items sent to the donation... READ MORE
Making a List
Posted by Rachel Balducci in Family on Tuesday, November 15, 2011
While I’m sure there are those who have finished their Christmas shopping (go you! You’re awesome), I am not one of those people.
I thought it might be nice for the mere mortals among us to share ideas on toys that stand the test of time, in case we’ve got some more shopping to do.
Today: toys for boys!
Here’s my list of a few items that are worth buying, things that last and get used and enjoyed... READ MORE
Christmas in August?
Posted by Danielle Bean in News on Friday, August 19, 2011
Faith & Family senior writer Lori Hadacek Chaplin is working on our annual Christmas gift guide, and she would like your input.
I would like to include a section in my Christmas Gift Guide article which includes suggestions from FF readers about gift ideas which cost nothing or only a few dollars. I don’t want my guide to seems too materialistic, and I am hoping that someone will have some interesting ideas beyond baking Christmas cookies as gifts.
Please leave your inexpensive Christmas gift ideas in the comments!
