The Revolt Against Contraception

To round out a week of NFP Awareness, I wanted to give the final word to 1flesh.org.

That’s the website run by college students unapologetic about their opposition to contraception and hoping to—their words—“bring sexy back:”

If anything can be said of our generation, it’s this: We want sexy back. Our parent’s generation, well, they lost it. They delivered to us a world with sky-high rates of divorce,... READ MORE

Less & Less Sexy

Catholics know contraception defies Church teaching.

How well do we understand that an impressive body of secular scientific evidence supports our moral conviction?

Paul VI prophesied it in Humanae Vitae.

Mary Eberstadt documents it in her intellectually relentless yet wonderfully readable little volume, Adam & Eve After the Pill.

Contraception has brought a great deal of happiness of the instantaneous... READ MORE

NFP Awareness Week

spread the good word July 22-28

It’s National NFP Awareness Week!

This is an annual educational campaign built around the the anniversary of Humanae Vitae and the feast of Saints Joachim & Anne to make people aware of the gift of NFP.

As Judy Barrett of the Diocese of Santa Rosa puts it:

Church teaching on contraception is morally correct, good for individuals, families and society at large, and it needs a fair hearing. One of... READ MORE

Does The Contraceptive Mentality Exist?

Oh, have mercy, not another internet NFP debate.

Well, yes, except I’m not trying to stir a debate necessarily, but to learn something.

Two things, actually.

A couple of my friends posted this nicely balanced reflection on why Catholics need not use NFP.

I like the article, but I’ve never heard anyone suggest NFP was required so am curious if you have. That’s question one.

My second question is... READ MORE

I Use NFP Buttons

Here’s something fun.

Spunky pro-NFP blog buttons and badges.

Pictured is my favorite (well, honestly, it’s a tie between that and “We do it every night. Chart.)”

But there are loads of others, and a whole website coming.

On a totally other note: ERIN, the Style, Sex & Substance winner! Shoot me an email—the one you left is not working for me—I’ll leave my contact info in comments.

Natural Family Planning Awareness Week

Pausing to pray

As you read this, I am attending the National Theology of the Body Congress in Pennsylvania.  Tonight, I will have the great honor of moderating a panel with several notable TOB speakers and authors.  It feels fitting to be in this place during NFP Awareness Week, when we the commemorate the anniversary of the papal encyclical Humanae Vitae (July 25) which articulates Catholic beliefs about human... Celebrating Natural Family Planning July 19 - 25

Around here, we celebrate Natural Family Planning every week with our Coffee Talk!  But this is a special week for discussing the topic, since the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has called this “Natural Family Planning Awareness Week”

The timing of this celebration is intentional.  According to the USCCB website, “The dates of Natural Family Planning Awareness Week highlight the anniversary... READ MORE
