Taking Lincoln Literally

At his second Inaugural in 1865, President Lincoln urged the Union to stay the course of the terrible Civil war, but not to descend into hatred:
“With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan – to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations.”
Now you can let Lincoln literally bind the nation’s wounds.

Happy Independence Day to everyone!
Since the fact that we can’t truly celebrate an occasion that no longer holds any meaning for us is one of my two or three hobby horses, it won’t surprise you that I think there is a link between understanding the Declaration of Independence and being able to enjoy today.
However, it’s a holiday, so I’m going to let someone else do the heavy lifting.

It’s an eloquent post consisting mostly of a short excerpt from the Lincoln-Douglas debates in which our 16th president explains the meaning of the 4th of July.
